Sacman: I played half life one and two and u don't need to play half life one too understand 2 because none of the characters are introduced in 1 and it never explains how the world becomes a post apocalyptic socialist community after the black mesa .
Yeah, the Combine aren't Socialist.
samsprinkle: Definately find a way. Half-Life 2 will only be enjoyed as intended I think if you've played through the first one...
Well, I played #2 first and understood most of what was going on.
I'm gonna say they ARE Socialist, thats what the Nazi's were
never trust anyone who says they are socialist, my uncle is a socialist and he's the biggest racist tyrant I know of.
Wrong, the Nazis weren't socialist, they just called themselves that because it has a good connotation in Europe, they were actually Fascist. Same thing with the USSR, they called themselves Socialist, but they weren't.
Gordon and Alyx aren't around the same age Gordon is in his 40's and Alyx is like 20 something.
Just out of curiosity, where did you find out that Freeman was in his 40's? I always under the impression that at the time of the original HL, Freeman was 27 years old and, due to being held in limbo until HL2, didn't age much if at all in the interim.
You can play 2 without playing the original, I did the same thing but didn't really understand most of the story. Once I'd played the first then it made much more sense to me.

They were socialists, emphasis on were, grand plans were to become fascist... you dont strengthen your economy in 4 years by clearing a country of workers.

I just put it together since Gordon is 27 in the original Half Life and Alyx was probably a child in the original Half Life it has to be at least a 15 year gap between Half Life and Half life 2 which would put Gordon in his 40's and Alyx in her late teens too twenties. but this is just a guess from information from a Half Life fan site.

i did the same thing as you, i player HL2 before playing the first one, there are only some vague references to the first one regarding the "black mesa incident" and that G'man took alyx out because he needed to use her. also you dopnt find out to much about Gman in the first HL anyway, i played all of them now and i still dont know what he is or how he does it, though you can get on wikipedia to find out more about his charcter.
I've played Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 without ever having played Half-Life. Most of the stuff made sense, although that could have been partially from me browsing the Half-Life wiki in my spare time. Still, I think Half-Life 2 is an awesome game, and you'd be fairly safe playing it before Half-Life. If you still think you shouldn't, then watch a walkthrough or two on YouTube.

But since he was put in some sort of stasis between the events of the two games, he should still be 27 in HL2.

but it never says what kind of stasis he could have been living like a regular citizen until G man needed him.

Well, anything is possible, of course. But considering what we know of the G-Man (namely the ability to stop time to talk to you), I just find it more plausible that he didn't age. Plus it makes more sense for a 27 year old to be running and jumping around zombies and the combine. And lastly, the fact that Eli, who did age, says to Gordon at the end of Ep2 that he sees him like his own son.
EDIT: Also this From the end of the first paragraph: "The G-Man, as he's come to be called, seals Gordon in stasis far from Earth, thought, and time itself."
Yes, there are a number of references in HL2 that hints Freeman hasn't really aged in between the first and second games. I don't remember it exactly, but is one of Eli's initial observations not as to how Freeman doesn't look a day older than he did during the time at Black Mesa? Also, not a direct hint, but there's also the scene (in episode 1 maybe?) where - slight spoiler -

well obviously he's younger than Eli Vance but the paragraph does clear it up about the stasis and it does make more sense for Gordon not to age instead of having a Gordon in his mid to late 40's destroying a town full of Zombies and enough heavily trained soldiers to populate mexico.
A socialist is usually Communist, which usually make people of the general population as valuble as a pile of shit with nuts in it. Tied to pole made from rotten dead carcassess of the general public being forced to eat their bags of shit with nuts in it. So everyone ends up being equal. Except doctor breen.
