Fallout 3 is an amazing game with both good graphics and great game play. Which can easily rival Oblivion, Mean while many still would choose Oblivion due to the fact of it relating to Fantasy where Fallout 3 is Sci-Fi. Which one do you prefer when playing an RPG?

I prefer my near future RPG when its like 2020 or what have you. but when push come sto shov ei like Sci-fi jsut a micron more.

Thats like asking. Which is better a Blonde bisexual nymphomaniac or a Brunnette bisexual nymphomaniac. If they had a baby that accquired the best of both games then that would be my choice. Please put that as a third option.

Hey now, there's steel in Future backdrops too. Maybe it'd be better to title it something like "leather versus lasers." My vote goes for lasers.

I remember reading once that whether something prefers sci-fi or fantasy depends on how optimistic they are. Optimists tend to enjoy stories of the future (Sci-Fi) while pessimists tend to want to reflect on better times (Fantasy).

This post is more arousing than most porn.

I prefer shooting things as far as games are concerned, on movies though it's a dead heat 50:50 since im still getting over the sheer awesomness of 300

Depends on the game, depends on the style. Whole number of factors, I really can't split them.

Fantasy of course. Why? Fantasy has more memorable characters!

I'm serious. I can't think of one character in a Sci-Fi game who is memorable.

In terms of an aesthetic choice I'm a sci-fi fan but to play I've always played more fantasy in various mediums. I am a massive fan of both although that perhaps goes without saying given the fact I am responding to this thread on a gaming website...

Let me answer your post with a qoute:

I think we'd have to strangle him if he were just asking, "SciFi or Fantasy" in general.

I like sci-fi more, but I don't like lasers. Like in Fallout, the bullet weapons are better than the laser ones

Sci Fi.

I prefer Technology over Magic. In RPGs, I always go a fighter or, if the bastards haven't passed a decree outlawing Gunpowder, someone with a gun. Magic is for cowards and women.

Though I do love Steampunk, even with a taint of magic. There needs to be more Arcanum.

I prefer plasma-based weapons. Green balls of energised particles that splash around a target, burning from all sides. A focused energy beam is too orderly for me.

I would prefer a mix. Looks like a lot of people would too. Good thing a 40K game is coming on eh?

You cant beat a good space battle, but for RPG's I'd rather go with fantasy.

Well Fallout3 won me over and i haven't sold it like i did oblivion, so scifi, and i must say i do heartily agree with the chap i have quoted below

I prefer fantasy themed settings, but I thought Fallout 3 was a much better game than Oblivion.

I say Oblivion... Even After playing Fallout, and beating it... And having beaten Oblivion...
I find myself reaching for Oblivion well before I go for Fallout

i like sci fi though i also like fantasy. please make a new option for both. though i do understand that you probably won't.

i will use FF 6 as an example here. It was somewhat Sci-Fi, and a bit fantasy. I don't think I've ever seen steampunk used so effectively in any media form.

I have one word for this topic: Shadowrun.

Anyway, I personally prefer Sci-fi, though it is an incredibly close call. I still enjoy spaceships and blasters over swords and spells, though. That, and most of my childhood involved Star Wars and Star Fox (And D&D). It's just in my blood, I suppose.

I would choose fantasy with all the swords bow and arrows close combat magic spells

-- I summon BALROG MUAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!

I counter with proton torpedoes.

...Oh gods, that would be epic.

Now THAT, is a funny little witticism.

Well played.

Can't something be both?

If I had to pick one then I would say fantasy because I prefer swords to guns, but if a sci fi had swords I'd be there like share ware.

Pulls a fire extinguisher.

Sci-Fi, if it's done right (Mass Effect), but I've put more time into fantasy games (Morrowind, Oblivion).

...then chases BALROG down the street shouting "get over here b&^%$".

Just one stupid question- how many hit points should a gun actually take off?

I like how they did it back in Phantasy Star IV. It's filled with androids, scientifically altered super-mutants, interplanetary travel, and all sorts of super-science.

But for all that advanced technology, they still can't outdo The Sword of Destiny! I about lost it when I realized that my whole space quest was just a front to acquire a glorified piece of metal with which to stab the Big Bad.

In other words, I like fantasy. Especially when it bitch-slaps sci-fi.

The best is the better written and designed game. Fallout 1 and 2 are awesome, but so is Torment, and Arcanum. Wizardy 8 is also awesome and it's both. Fallout 3 and Oblivion are both horrendous though, despite being post-apoc (which beats everything, but can be both sci-fi and fantasy, or anything else).

Fantasy, but damm is it close.

Except for Bioshock, I've never played a Sci - Fi RPG that i liked (yes, Fallout 3 included). If there's a company that could make a Sci - Fi RPG that i liked without taking the success from one of its previous games and completely ripping off, then yes, i suppose i could like a Sci - Fi RPG other than Bioshock. (I can just imagine Oblivion screaming: "No my success!!! I WANT IT BACK!!!). Even though Bioshock was completely ripped off from System Shock 2, I never played System Shock 2 although i still really enjoyed Bioshock. I guess i hate Fallout 3 for the same reason i hated Oblivion. (Whatever the reason was). And no, i didnt like Mass Effect.

In my mind, Fallout 3 could've been a great game if it was an FPS (it could take advantage of the VATS even better) I guess that fighting super mutants in the Capitol Wasteland in 2077 feels the same as fighting wild dogs in the countryside in ???? B.C.

I'd say both, as in Star Wars. but if I had to choose it would be fantasy or perhaps a near future with all the magic of the legends being real :)

Sci-fi.

What's the point of exploring a world if you can't fire a multiple warhead nuke at it?

Vlane:

What about Gordon Freeman?

Personally Sci-Fi wins out purely for the possibility of a 40k RPG (though not an MMO). However it is a hard choice to make.

Actually, you know what I'd really like to see? A modern RPG with modern guns and a modern city. Hell they could even throw in superheroes, or whatever, but how about and RPG set in a modern mundane city.

Also Sci-Fi wins out for proper RPGs as well.

As much as I love Sci-Fi (and it's a lot!) I have to choose fantasy. I never got into KOTOR, but I love Oblivion, Morrowind and Diablo. Battling with a sword is much more fun than using a futuristic laser gun that instantly kills, the fantasy environments will always look amazing while Sci-Fi areas can get dull (too much metal..). Plus, I love using an ol fashioned bow to kill off an orc ;)
