Don't care. As long as its an intresting IP it can about 3 eyed pandas that invade the nether kingdom of Greg-land. Hang on, I'm writing this down...

Thats like asking. Which is better a Blonde bisexual nymphomaniac or a Brunnette bisexual nymphomaniac. If they had a baby that accquired the best of both games then that would be my choice. Please put that as a third option.

Brunette. As long as Sci-Fi is brunette, of course.

i will use FF 6 as an example here. It was somewhat Sci-Fi, and a bit fantasy. I don't think I've ever seen steampunk used so effectively in any media form.

Well...the Steampunk civilization in Rise of Legends....

I'm not going to lie. I'm a huge fantasy nerd, and it can still feel fresh to me. Almost every sci-fi universe, meanwhile, I find myself comparing to Star Wars. I think sci-fi is just harder to do because you have less room to move within the genre.

I'll stick with my post apocalyptic RPG for now, thank you very much. I just like the feel of it more

Fantasy of course. Why? Fantasy has more memorable characters!

I'm serious. I can't think of one character in a Sci-Fi game who is memorable.

What about Gordon Freeman?

I haven't played any Half-Life game so I didn't knew that it is a Sci-Fi game.

To clarify, you said "Sci-fi game" not, "Sci-fi RPG". As for a memorable sci-fi character, how about Revan from Knights of the Old Republic? Or HK-47?

I'm not really a fan of KotOR but okay Revan is memorable.

And there I was thinking he meant John Henry Iron aka Steel battle with a drinking addiction to Laser Malt Liquor.

Incidentally, Sci-Fi on general terms but a well done knights battling evil tops everything for me (just isn't done often, or well).

Just not enough Sci-Fi RPGs so I vote for that.

I'm trying to think of more, but there aren't that many Sci-Fi RPGs. RPGs are pretty often the realm of Fantasy, but there are getting to be more sci-fi RPGs, with games like Mass Effect, KotOR, hell, there's even a RPG based on Alien being produced. J.E. Sawyer is working on it, if I remember correctly.

Master Chief? Sgt Johnson? Darth Vader n his little kid? Gordon Freeman needs to be mentioned again - just 'cause you ain't played the game doesn't make him un-memorable.

You can argue about Darth Vader because the movies made him memorable and not the games.

And Master Chief is maybe memorable to some people but not to me.

I don't say that Gordon isn't memorable because I haven't played the games. I said I didn't knew that Half-Life is a Sci-Fi game.

Scifi has a greater range of possibility than fantisy ,which generaly gets shoehorned into midievel europe with magic. That being said Scifi has a greater posibility of getting it wrong. For every Dune or Warhammer 40K universe there are dozens pathetic attempts to create a memorable setting, which fail miserably. So miserably I can't remember them right now.

Both are great, both have many, many subgenres that are pure liquid awesome. In general fantasy is awesome because there's an infinitely greater amount of possibilities to choose from, and sci-fi is great because it can predict the future and do so with huge explosions.

Recently? Would have to say Sci-Fi. Had a excellent succession of good Sci-Fi RPGs. Mass Effect, Bioshock (.. Steam-Punk I know, but it's closer to Sci-Fi than fantasy in my view), STALKER, Fallout and it's predecessors. It goes on.

They both are indeed good, but with Science Fiction, the only restriction on what you can do is the cost and thee developers' imaginations. Warhammer 40K comes to mind here. With Fantasy, there is a set limit.

Surely, George Lucas cracked this problem with a sword which could also cut through doors like a laser - the lightsabre.

I tend to enjoy both kinds, but at a push I would choose Sci-fi. My favourite kind of game is one set in the very near future - Somewhere between 2010-2050 tends to be my ideal setting, although that probably doesn't class as Sci-fi.

i choose fantasy becuase i'd like to think a massive storm of lightning, swords, and biscuts is more powerful than 1 plasma rifle wielding soldier

I prefer Sci-Fi RPG's since there tends to be less tension surrounding what you have to take in as the world and what you have to accept as 'fact'.

After all, which sounds cooler? An enchanted dagger of 'you can't be arsed to fight anymore' named 'Doubt-strike' or a advanced Axon pattern plasma pistol mk2? (you can name the pistol yourself is you wish)

Whatever you can list as being present in an fantasy RPG is not only present in Sci-fi but has also useually undergone an uprade or two in terms of coolness.

Plate armour and chain mail = Advanced combat/enviro suits and personal force shields.

Crossbows and muskets = Plasma rifles, shotguns and miniguns.

Magic = Psychic powers

Dragons and monsters = extraterrestrial beasts

Elves, Dwarfs and other friendly races = Aliens, Robots and other friendly inhabbitants of space

I could go on.

Of course it always depends on the story and graphic style, but personally I like sci fi better. At least in the RPG world, fantasy is done more often and generally better, so a GOOD sci fi is always welcome.

There's also more opportunity for creativity, in my opinion. Any kind of archtitecture or weapons can be put in the game, while with fantasy you're limited to medieval weapons and such. There's always magic, but even that has limits.

Why do people keep thinking of fantasy as only the Medieval Europe stuff? The whole point of fantasy is that you can make anything you feel like!

Though looking back on it, it does seem that most of the sci-fi RPGs are more original than the fantasy ones. It's different with books, I think. Maybe some developers should break out some Arabian or Aztec myths to make their games. That would be cool.
