The scandal of the particular means that, by getting one thing, you instantly aren't able to get anything else. So, the Orange Box had three games, all very different, so it solved the scandal of the particular. I was wondering why they don't have more group games then. I think it would be cool, how bout you guys?
xitel: By packaging things separately they can charge more per game. It's not going to happen more because it means they make less money.
Capitalism at its best.
Yep, but you'll always have people like Valve, I guess, who are willing to lose a bit of money if it means their insane-and deserved- amount of customer loyalty.

Not if the market complains enough, or another company begins to produce Orange Box-esque game packets for the same cost as whole games...but that's free market and we don't exactly have that...

The valve complete pack being a wonderful example: £52! Left4dead and the Orange box alone cost more than that, and you still need to buy counterstrike, day of defeat, half life source and it's various expansions and the original versions of CS, DoD and TF.
I'm sure it's not the case overall, but Valve will be getting more money from me in the long run. I bought the Orange Box mainly for Portal (although I wouldn't have paid the full price for just Portal) and I was hooked on Half Life too. So they can expect me to buy Episode 3 when it comes out.

I'm fairly ceratin that any money that Valve lost on packaging those games together, they made up in spades on sheer volume of units sold.

It basically proves, virtually giving stuff away works better. Valve is now rolling in dosh.

What? Who's this "we" you speak of?

Nevermind that the consumer-base isn't exactly looking out for itself.

...The free market exists, but companies just try to make as much money as possible, and therefore make individual games.
I'd like to pop in and play my Orange Box games but my Hard drive absolutely HATES loading Source Engine games. those 3-5 second loading blips in HL2 takes minutes to complete, TF2 literally requires 22 minutes to get to main menu, Portal I suspect the same results as HL2.
None of my other games like Doom 3, Clear Sky, Dawn of War, NHL 08, Battlefield 2, Red Orchestra, Trackmania, Half Life 1, etc. do not suffer from extended load times on my Hard drive this only happens with Source Engine games.

Arguably it does not, corporations with ties in the government, monopolies and massive regulation are not part of the free market. I know of no country that does not have at least one of those systems in place. But we could just end up arguing apples and oranges and take this topic WAY off topic.
So to answer the topic question yes, I'd love to see more collections of games released, however, as some of the people here argue, many companies will probably not release collections based on profits. I could definitely Valve releasing more collections, hopefully Black Mesa Mod with Episode Three...

Perhaps if you argue from an old conception of the free market, but the system, and ideas, can change over time.
Anyway, the Orange Box contained rather short games that would have had to sell for lower prices (unless they wanted to risk disappointment and hate from their devoted fanbase). Therefore, an idea like the Orange Box would only really work with short, not really "full" games.
Valve is that nice person who, though sometimes fading into the background, is loved by all because there is nothing offensive about them. Its either good or neutral relations with the gaming community, except for a little slowness with things for the 360.
