Gone Gonzo Posts: 1551 Joined: 4 Sep 2008 | Here's the article for everyone. I don't disagree. In fact, I despise Mario. Super Mario 64 is the only good one. |
Beat Writer Posts: 189 Joined: 18 Dec 2008 | I personally blame the fact that it came with the console. (I know the the original SMB came with the console too, just saying so people won't keep responding to me every 5 seconds). |
Muckraker Posts: 335 Joined: 30 Apr 2008 | a) There are more people now. It's a great game, but you can't compare them. It's like the box office record that gets broken year after year -- of course the dollar value goes up, there are more people watching movies and the movies cost more. You can't directly compare things that are subject to inflation. Besides, who actually bought SMB? It came free with every NES. Though I suppose the same can be said for Wii Sports (unless you received Wii Play instead, as some regions did). |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 577 Joined: 20 Dec 2008 | Wii Sports comes with the Wii in most regions, so it shouldn't be eligible. Many people who bought the Wii probably would not have bought Wii Sports separately. However, a lot of people probably bought the Wii to play Wii Sports. But it shouldn't count as the most popular game of all time. Might as well say Minesweeper is, because it comes with Windows OSs. Or Line Rider, because it's available on the Internet. |

Or Halo. Once you've got a mountain Dew deal, you've hit the big time. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1575 Joined: 31 Aug 2008 | People are buying the wii only because it's cheaper than everything else (minus the 360 arcade but if you bought that you'd be downright STUPID) that's new. Wii Sports comes with it and it sells like hotcakes because of it. Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed? Yes. |
On the Record Posts: 6209 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | Wii Sports comes with the god damned Wii! Is that really fair to count something that comes in the box that's more of a tech demo to show off the Wii's motion control? Wii Sports isn't even sold separately to my knowledge, Super Mario Bros was (to my knowledge). That damn cheater of a Wii Sports! But then again, I couldn't give two shits....still completely stupid though. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1483 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | Um... SMB is a google years old (Sales will dry up eventualy) and Wii Sports comes with the Wii, the game system bought by "retards"(total joke), little kids, and confused moms/dads/grandmas/grandpas the world over. Basicaly, everyone and there brother. |

Seriously though, Wii sports is, for all intents and purposes the only game on the Wii (that I'm aware of) that lives up to the system's potential. The oddball controls work perfectly here, the games are easy to pick up but difficult to master and it inspires social gaming. Mario might be the icon of Nintendo, but the Mii is the frontman for the Wii as far as I'm concerned. |

SMB came with the NES. |

Yep, and SMB came with the NES. People buy the Wii solely on the strength of Wii sports. Most people I know rarely play their Wii for anything BUT Wii sports. They ought to make a version of the Wii that is 80 bucks cheaper and only plays Wii sports. |

I think the last game I seriously played the Wii for was No More Heroes (where I get my user name from) and that was 11 months ago. The only other games I play for it is the occasional rent and playing SSBB at school with freinds. User was banned for: Why do Many Girls take Pictures of Themselves?. (Permanent) |

If people are going to make the claim that Wii sports is the best selling game of all time even though it comes with the system then I honestly think that Minesweeper should be recognized as the true winner. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2111 Joined: 15 Jun 2008 | Has anybody ever actually bought a copy of Wii Sports? Other than the Japanese, of course, I don't think it's bundled over there. |
Muckraker Posts: 323 Joined: 3 Sep 2008 | It comes with the bloody console. Should be stand alone sales... |

People buy a Wii because of the motion controls and it's apparent simplicity. These features are best exemplified in Wii sports, which in my book is the best game the system has going for it (in terms of games designed around the idea the system represents). When people buy a console, they buy it for the games they know about. Wii sports demonstrates the great potential of the control system and then people usually buy a few more games before they realize most of the time those motion controls are just terrible. |

Beat Writer Posts: 200 Joined: 16 Dec 2008 | look at all the people that dont realize SMB came with the nes....and wii sports is sold seperately in japan. failtruck pic plz someone |
Anonymous Source Posts: 4 Joined: 5 Dec 2008 | Nevermind that it's bundled, you also have to bear in mind what OTHER games are avaialable for the system. The NES has at least two dozen other titles worth owning off the top of my head. I like the Wii alot but if you own wii sports, wii play, brawl, and twilight princess (really a cube game anyway), you have nothing else to buy. |

You can buy it separately in the US as well. Afterall, it is entirely possible to buy a refurbished Wii that comes with nothing but the console. |

That almost says it all. Especially the whole thing about more people playing games now. You've got the "old-school" demographic who grew up playing SMB, the "hardcore" demographic who grew up with a Playstation, and you've got the "kids and grandparents" demographic that people are so insistant are the only ones who play Wii games. Another thing that's important to mention is that the Wii has already achieved about half of the NES's worldwide lifetime sales. The NES was being produced in the US for about 10 years and in Japan for about 20 years (no I'm not making that up). It also never sold very well outside of the Japanese and US markets. In Europe in particular the NES had poor marketting and few releases. Nintendo has learned since then and now markets much more heavily in Europe and Australia. So yeah, it's not really that surprising. With more people playing games now, the flagship software is selling better than it used to. It doesn't disappoint me either since I don't really base my happiness on how much a particular piece of software or hardware is selling. Plus it's a fun game. |

A bit harsh, but I'm not keen on mario either. After all that jumping around you you think he would have lost a bit more weight... I personally couldn't care less what games out-sell others. It's not like these games are sacred or anything. User was banned for: Banning poems from schools in the UK. (Permanent) |

I just read an article saying that Wii Sports is now the best selling video game of all time, beating the original Super Mario Bros for the NES.
What are your thoughts?
