It's packaged with the console, so it doesn't count. It's like saying 'we sold 40million paper boxes with Big Macs'. No you didn't you gave the games out when people bought a Wii, that's not a sale of your game. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 534 Joined: 11 Aug 2008 | Just to reiterate what everyone else said: Wii Sports comes with the fucking console! The sales figures for it are basically # of Wii's sold. You're essentially comparing console sales to game sales..Apples and oranges folks. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1129 Joined: 11 Dec 2007 | But how many people have bought the version on the virtual console that own a wii? 5 dollars gets you the game and I am quite sure lots of people have gone this route. So unless these stats are counted, I disregard this article. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1261 Joined: 24 Jun 2008 | Really? I just checked the records for game sales like 2 weeks ago and it said mario bros sold 10 million more then the second most selling game ever.(i don't remember the 2nd best selling game think it was halo.) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4297 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | That pretty much means that more wii's have been sold than Super Mario.... I supported the monster Wii Sports! |

I see, the NES was just a couple of years before my time so I didn't know. Still though, it's like Intel saying they make the most popular PC graphics chips just because they're installed on almost every damned motherboard ever made...Cheats the lot of them. This should really be titled "Wii outsells NES" really. It seems hardly fair to call either game a bestseller when they both come with their respective consoles in the first place. |

The Wii is what it is, its that system everyone says they want that grows dust 2 weeks later in the corner. Both games are pretty redundant anyway, its mostly nostalgia that keeps me with Mario. |

There are a rare set of games so magical that people buy consoles soley based on the (often presumed) strength of a single game. It just so happens that the NES and Wii seemed to have launched with their iconic game right in the box. The NES came with Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt (and a light gun) while the Wii launched with Wii fit. Aside from improvements in presentation down the road, both games essentially represent what their respective console offered at the time. Gears of War is an excellent non packaged example of this, and some sources have cited that Gears alone was the catalyst for more than a million 360 purchases. The original X-Box of course had Halo, a game so iconic that one cannot mention the Xbox without having people go on and on about that game and it's sequels. Just because that truly iconic game that though some miracle of design and timing becomes the public face of the hardware happens to come packaged in the system means little. Wii sports in my view has done more to move Wii hardware off the shelves than any other game. Long time gamers might purchase a Wii based on the presumed strengths of long running series like Zelda and Mario, but when people have no real experience with video games Wii sports truly represents everything the Wii markets itself as. And let's keep in mind exactly what kind of numbers we are talking here. SMB sales to date are 40.24 million units. Wii sports has moved more than 45 million units. In japan, where Wii sports is not bundled with the console, 45% of buyers purchased wii sports along with the system. That provides at least one tangible piece of evidence that a great many Wii owners purchase a Wii to play Wii sports. Who is to say how many units of either game would have moved if they didn't come pre-bundled. One thing to note, is when the NES launched the video game market had crashed and almost all competitors had gone out of business. At the time, there were all of 18 titles available for the system, and each and every one of those Nintendos came pre boxed with the original champion. At the end of the day, it's completely fair to crown Wii sports as the new champion. The king that was dethroned also enjoyed a bundled launch, and more importantly it has 25 total years of sales. In only around 2 years more copies of Wii sports have been moved, one way or another than SMB managed to move over the last quarter century. Yes, it's a different time and the world's view of video games has shifted somewhat; that doesn't make Wii Sport's feat any less astounding. |

Only games that people actually have to go out and buy separately should be allowed to hold the title of "best selling game ever," not games that come with the damned console. That is cheating, and besides which, owning Wii Sports and Super Mario Bros. doesn't necessarily mean they WANTED the game, just got it for free because they wanted the actual console. |

I'm currently taking offense to that. Anyway, SMB is eff old, and the Wii can't be purchased new without Wii Sports. So, it was bound to happen. User was banned for: The hypocrisy is KILLING me.. (Permanent) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2044 Joined: 3 Sep 2008 | I would be interested to see what the total non bundled sales of either game amount to. I imagine the results are still quite staggering. If a game moves more than a million units it's a smash hit and I'd be willing to wager either game has sold more than 10 million units outside of bundling but that's just a stab in the dark. I can't seem to find any figures of sales outside of bundling for either game. The top selling games (if you ignore bundled games) are Pokemon red/blue/green (same game, different pokemon apparently) for the game boy with more than 20 million copies sold. Number two at more than 18 million is Super Mario Brothers 3. Number 3 is the Sims (16 million). |

Although I do admit that the success is due to an impressive marketing scheme for both the Wii and the game itself. Wii sports is probably one of the few reasons I would have to buy a Wii and I have witnessed how seemingly non-gaming types were absorbed in it. Ultimately I don't really care, it doesn't affect the games I am going to buy in the future =) |

It's [QUOTE] sometimes you might have to click it twice or more for it to input the text. I'd say it's unfair to say it's the most sold game when it's given away free with the system in most areas but if it were refraised as most owned hard copy of a game then there be no question. Then that doesn't sound as catchy as Sold or as simple. Also, isn't any step forward for world wide gaming for everyone better for it as a whole? Example of a possible outcome you likely wouldn't see: A anti-gaming activist trying to say video games kill/teach killing while thier 30 year old sister who's a teacher plays Grand Theft Auto 7: City of Rage who just recieved Teacher of the Year and happily does chairity work part time.

Anonymous Source Posts: 2 Joined: 8 Jan 2009 | SMB is as close as a perfect game as it can get. It sold so high because it was one of the best games ever made. Wii sports on the other hand sells because alot of idiots buy it just as a present for their kids or for the retarded cow in their closet. The world of gaming is officially gone. Rename it to the world of retarded games of the retarded. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2338 Joined: 5 Nov 2008 | Games that come with their respective platforms don't count so neither of these games are eligible for sales discussion. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1400 Joined: 10 May 2008 | Not really suprised Super Mario Brothers on the NES was outsold, its been almost 20 years since then so it was only a matter of time, Wii Sports will also get outsold sooner or later, though i doubt it will last as long as SMB did seeing as SMB is one of the best games ever, and Wii Sports isnt really what i'd qualify a game, its a sport simulator for kids. |

I like the baseless hostility and wild accusations in this post. Fun fact: morons are everywhere. It doesn't matter if Wii Sports is sold exclusively to drooling idiots. It doesn't matter if the game is bundled. It doesn't matter that there are more gamers now than there were in 1983 (the year the NES launched with SMB, 1985 it launched in the US with SMB bundled). All that matters is the game has sold more copies. You can't reason your way out of the simple fact that Wii sports, for a whole host of reasons, from the common bundle to the legions of idiots to the alignment if the moons of saturn: 45 million copies of Wii sports have moved off the shelves in two years, wheras in 25 years SMB has only managed to move about 42 million units. |
