So I was playing gears 2 today and to my surprise I heard dom santiago shout out "It's only a flesh wound!" in a sudo brittish accent, a direct reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And several of the achivements where great references to like "Have fun storming the castle". I always loved discoving pop references in games so I was wondering what was your guys favorites?

LOL, I just finished playing that and didn't catch on . . . but I am slightly out of the loop when it comes to pop culture *sighs*

I caught it completely at random, but in Halo 3 one of the generic marines shouted out "Someone's pending for a bending!"

Well, the Bridge Keeper in Fallout 2 is a personal favourite as is the Snatcher reference in the most recent Fallout outing. Generally i don't like them though as they are a big handed slap in the face from reality. Which sucks.

This doesn't strictly count, but there was a great little self-referential joke in Wind Waker. Of course, Nintendo was doing pretty poorly in the home console market at that time. One of the little side-quests you could do in WW was something called the "Nintendo Figurine Club" (or something like that). The first time you went into it, the guy who ran it said something along the lines of; "we may be losing members recently due to our lack of 'gimmicky' attractions, but don't worry. True fans know we're the coolest".

Kind of depressing when you consider the direction they've taken with the Wii though...

Gordon, from Gecko, telling you that Greed is Good. Though not as good as The Brain, with his plan to take over the world.

Fallout 2 was more easter eggs than actual game.

Dom in Gears II saying "Yeah, but then I couldn't see snipers so good could I?" In response to a mention of helmets.
Mirror's Edge's achievement "Hey! It'sa me!" When you jump on someone and knock them out.

Secret room in Max Payne, requiring some tough window ledge traversing. Man lies dead on the floor, a shard of wood through his heart. As he died, he'd just managed to start scrawling something on the floor. BUFF (blood trails off)

Army of 2 and you're in the middle of a fire fight and the characters start discussing the finer points of the Wu-Tang Clan

I loved all the adverts and references in the PS2 Futurama game. There were just such a shit-load. Pity the game was slightly arse.

this is the other way round but in Shrek 2 afetr Shrek and Fiona have their arguement and the camera pans to the king, as he walks back into his room, on the wall behind him is the picture of Link riding Epona

Fallout 2 was loaded with pop culture references. A few that chuckled me:

- Mike "The Masticator" final New Reno boxing opponent
- Wounded Enemy NPC: "I wish I had a limit break"
- Hubologists and their Celebrity Spokesmen

Don't know if it counts, but in WoW in Un'Goro Crater, the gorillas drop empty barrels. Donkey Kong reference. There's also a quest there with a zelda reference.

I can't remember any specific ones, but I remember Timesplitters: Future Perfect referenced pop culture a lot.

My favourite has to be all those at the ending of Monkey Island 2.
There are other exellent ones in all the Monkey Island games, but that has to be my favourite.

The ones in Warcraft III rank fairly highly with me, particularly the Star Wars ones.

I don't really have a specific favorite, but the first one that came to mind was the marine saying "This is Sparta!!" when you shoot the Spartan Laser.

EDIT: Not sure if this counts, but in L4D one of the Achievements is Zombie Genocidist. To get it you have to kill 53,595 zombies. Which, in case you didn't know, is +1 to Dead Rising's genocide Achievement.

A recent one that comes to mind was Fallout 3 and its barkeeper in the ghoul settlement. He strangely reminded me of Half-Life's G-Man in the way he talked and his head was shaped. There was some kind of mercenary as well who worked for him and who was one of the more silent types. :)

I thought all the signs in Mirror's Edge to 'Vote Callaghan' with a motto paraphrased from The Smiler's(Senator Callahan) campaign in Transmetropolitan were pretty awesome, but then again, I could be looking too deeply into it, I do that when Transmet is involved.

The marine voiced by Adam Baldwin in Halo 3 says, "Sure would be nice if we had some GRENADES!" during the siege in the hangar bay. (Serenity reference)

Halo 3 is FULL of pop ref. if you turn on the IWHBYD skull.

Gears 2 achievement, "Have fun storming the castle" (Princess Bride reference)

at the final (sorta) boss at No more heroes there's a briliant reference to Duke Nukem. something like: 'Wauw, you must have a frustrating back story'
'yeah, but I am not gonna tell'
'Aaw, why not?'
'That story alone would make it a M-rated game, delaying it even further. You dont want this to become No more Heroes forever do you?'

I remember finding a list of all the references in Timesplitters FP, it was a big list. The best one had to be the Shaun of the Dead reference.

Fallout 3, the ghoul mercenary you get from the bar, when you tell him to change him from a melee weapon to long range, he says "Good, I find happiness in a warm gun" Which was funny because I was listening to the beatles at that moment.

Splinter Cell:Chaos theory is a good one for references.
"Fisher you need to open the case and disarm the nukes."
"Shame i forgot my crowbar."
"Crowbar? Crowbars are for geeks with glasses." a half-life reference.

Also if you choose to sneak through a certain vent near the end of the game you can overhear 2 guards discussing the second PoP game.

I was just doing that quest and I commented to my guild friend who was helping me, and he didn't notice it. We both cracked up.

Random note, did anyone here ever have the little hand held DK games that look like really old chunky Nintendo DS? Dual screen, and they ran on watch batteries. I used to have 2 of them...was wondering how many other people had them at one point in their life...or still have them :)
