Just imagine a 3D Tetris! Especially if they added depth to the gameplay... oh man that would be nuts.

The closest thing I can think of without being complete crap the Zombie Master maps that drop tetris blocks on you. Fun but nothing amazing of course you probly don't even know what Im talking about.

I think it would be great, but it would have to be done right.

3D Tetris was made for the Virtual Boy, wasn't that good.
Since Tetris is one of my favorite games, I wouldn't mind the new challenge of it being in 3D, but it probably wont look like the blocks are falling towards you, who knows.

Maybe some kind of Matrix game, where you can see the bullet slowly moving out of the Tv screen and towards your head.
And because you'd think it's real, you'll move your head to side and then smile because you think you're "the one". :)

Are you sure they weren't goggles?

3D Tetris seems like some crazed blasphemous oxymoron.

I'd love Viva Pinata in 3D. It'd be like being hugged with joy and colour

Gaaaayyyy...
(When's it coming out!? When!?)

yes please!

Any racing game would be 100 times more visceral in true 3d, you'd probably yank your neck upon crashing though, or brace for impact! :p which is good.

You mean like how they're possibly making Gran Turismo 5 in 3D?

According to what I've read, the 360 can't do it, only the Ps3 can, and it would only need a firmware update. So no Pinatas. Instead, Sackboys and Eyepets.

nVidia just announced these super-duper 3D glasses for games. All you need is a monitor that supports it.

If what you've read is from a marketing company hired by Sony I wouldn't believe them on that one.

I don't know if 3 dimensionality really enhances anything in entertainment with the possible exception of film.
I don't think games need to be like that.

Honestly, the whole 3D phenomenon is just gimmicky and pointless. The only use of it that I can think of that would do anything to immerse the viewer without hitting them over the head with the effect would be to enhance the depth of field, something that can now be accomplished as a separate option without the need for those stupid ass glasses.

To be honest, the 3D Vision Goggles aren't exactly revolutionary. It isn't as if they contain some secret alien technology that no one's seen before. Basically, the unit consists of a pair of special glasses with lenses that are capable of shuttering open and closed rapidly; the wireless IR base plugs into a USB port and sends the proper signals, telling the lenses when to flicker on and off. Pair this with a compatible display--you need an LCD or CRT monitor (and a compatible video card if you're running it on a PC), or HDTV capable of delivering 3D visuals--and Nvidia's custom software and you're off and running. There are no patches to download, no hacking of .ini files or special tweaks needed; just turn everything on, boot up your game of choice and prepare to be impressed.

These are the same shutter glass technology I was mentioning earlier. I'm not sure why they're charging $200 for them - the reviewer doesn't make clear why these are supposedly better than the shutter glasses of the past.

The fact that these are made by NVIDIA has little to do with why the glasses require an NVIDIA card. It's just that NVIDIA has done a much better job of keeping their stereo 3D drivers up to date. ATI/AMD, comparatively, has given up on the idea of 3D Stereo drivers a long time ago. It was actually a pretty big factor in my jumping off the ATI bandwagon: I had some shutter glasses, but had to settle for 3d party developed drivers which didn't have nearly the compatibility as NVIDIA drivers would.

When the game I was playing had proper driver and Z-Buffer support, shutter glasses worked great. Typically, a 3D game will be automatically compatible - it uses the same instructions sent to the video card drivers to render a true 3D scene. However, game developers tend to take shortcuts and make certain aspects of the interface, like menus or crosshairs and sometimes objects/creatures in the game world, simply stuck in 2D on top of the 3D view. On a 2D display you can't tell the difference, but this is a mess to deal with in true 3D. Consequently, the number of games which are truly 3D compatible is rare - many can be played in 3D, but few completely comfortably.

The transition from CRT to LCD monitors have temporary set back our refresh rates. That's problematic because shutter glasses work by rapidly shifting the monitor display from left eye to right eye while blocking out the eye that shouldn't see the image. You need at least about 90 hertz for it to be reasonable. Fortunately, some new LCD monitors have a high refresh rate, but these are rare and (I'm guessing) unusually expensive.

A newer development, in terms of 3D technology, are holographic and 3D monitors which sound like something out of a Sci-Fi but are actually quite real. 3D without the shutter glasses (or via polarized glasses). The cost, of course, is fairly astronomical. The price of the better tech should be reduced as the technology catches on any year now, and so also should games' Z-buffer support.

Even what we have now is miles better than the Virtual Boy: headache/eyestrain are almost unheard of. (I wouldn't try it if you're epileptic though, shutter glasses employ a ton of flickering to create the illusion.) Right now, $50-$150 for a shutter glasses setup and an old but 100 hertz or better CRT monitor (est $100) is the cheapest way to go about it. (This is assuming you already have an NVIDIA card.) Be warned: once you go 3D, and see that the objects in the game actually have depth, it's hard to go back. The "Oh Shi- It's Coming At Me!" moments, while fleeting, are very real (and awesome).

Unless we totally screw the pooch (this recession will likely slow things down) chances are that real 3D will be mainstream well before 2020.
