Copy Clerk Posts: 102 Joined: 22 Jul 2008 | I think your wrong. All you've just done is list a number of generalisations. Some people find these games fun, as is the usual response, if you don't like them don't play them. Live and let live. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 87 Joined: 23 Dec 2008 | Personally in some sense I agree. When it comes to games like Madden I won't rush out and buy the new one each year. They are just too similar for me to justify another 60 bucks. I find this differant with say Tiger Woods though as I feel like there is enough change each year to justify it. For this fact I usually might even wait a few months to buy a newer sports game so that the price comes down. I also agree that I like RPG's because it is like reading a good book with total immersion...but a good sports game for a true sports nut probably plays in the same way for that person. Guess that is why they make a variety of games. |

First can I ask you this, are you a fan of guitar hero or rock band games? |

I personally think sports games are terrible and I loathe them, but if you play RPG's, why don't you go kill stuff with swords? Or if you also like FPS's, why not join the army? And as someone said above, do you play Rock Band or Guitar Hero? |

So? That doesn't mean he's wrong. Generalisations are all based in fact and necessary for discussion.
And that usual response is nothing but detrimental to discussion. On topic. And it's not unheard of for people to teach themselves martial arts from films, so why not something similar in games? I still hate sports games, though. |

I agree. The only difference between Madden 08 and Madden 09 is a change in the number and one or two new players. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1289 Joined: 18 Jun 2008 | I don't sports games are much fun either, and I'm quite the sports enthusiast. I'd rather play the sport instead I think. I enjoy the occasional friendly against a friend, don't get me wrong, but I agree that there aren't many differences between the last year's games compared to this year's. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 87 Joined: 23 Dec 2008 | Danny Ocean- I agree with you talking about the physical exertion and just being able to focus on tactics. I find with golf games it helps me learn better course management. This leads to me sometimes laying up more often than trying to go for it. |
Muckraker Posts: 227 Joined: 8 Jan 2009 | I don't hate sports games, in fact, I quite enjoy playing them (with friends), rather than actually going outside and running around (fat bastard). But I do agree, that sports games are just going to be the same over and over, there really isn't much they can add anymore except new names of players. Maybe a new outrageous sports game should be released, one that is totally over the top and crazy and it's just for pure fun. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 623 Joined: 30 Sep 2008 | I play Madden, Dirt, Test Drive Unlimited, and Tiger Woods frequently; enjoying them all (except for the frequent bullshittyness of Madden), and I also golf around 35 times a year, play a lot of touch and tackle football, as well as baseball and softball. While I don't race cars, I don't think that's something that many people can do, at least legally. Sports games are just like RPG's in that you will never be a SPECTRE and track down Reapers, and most all of us will never be a professional athlete. It allows people to do what they cannot in real life, and that, just as much as an immersive story, is the point of a game. |

well, i have played rockband and guitar hero before, but i dont care for them, i am actually in a few actual rock bands, i play bass, electric guitar and sing. comparing actually being on a stage and performing in front of a live audience is far better than either of those games. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 780 Joined: 7 Jan 2009 | I have no problem with sports games (except Madden). In fact I rather like the Tiger Woods and FIFA games. That being said, I don't understand buying the next version every year. The gameplay is usually almost exactly the same and I can't see paying $60 for updated rosters. NHL Hitz was loads of fun, I wish they would release a new one for 360. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1331 Joined: 22 Oct 2008 | Eh, I don't think it's right that EA can charge $60 for a game that makes a few marginal improvements from game to game, but there is nothing wrong with them per se. I enjoy a night of Fifa as much as I do Fallout or COD, but the sad thing is is that it took them three games to fix a control problem that should have either A) never been present, B) changeable with customizable controls, or C) fixed in Fifa '07. |

Ok, maybe i used the wrong word. 'Assumptions' is better.
It's a usual response, because it stops unecessary discussions. The OP clearly dislikes sports games, so playing sports games is now stupid? Other people, and this may sound crazy actually 'enjoy' playing them.I don't like Japanese RPG's but I don't create a thread stating that they are pointless. Not every game has to have a story etc.. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 71 Joined: 15 Aug 2008 | by the way, i have nothing against people who play sports games, i as an individual just dont believe they are as rewarding to play, i dont believe that sports games should never be played but i dont care for the genre, this forum is based off of my opinion, but that is only what i feel, agree with it, disagree with it, i like your input regardless whether you agree with me or not |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2190 Joined: 4 Jun 2008 | Well, I don't even like playing most sports so why would I be inclined to play a game centred around a sport I don't have any interest in? If you are a football fan for example then you could easily just go out and play football or just watch a game of football, you don't need a game to create a fantasy for you (unless you support one of those crappy teams that never even qualify for anything, in which case these games are probably the closest you're ever going to get to seeing them win for once). Try applying the 'why don't you go out and do it' logic to other games and you fall flat, FPS games? I would get shot and die, war is not fun in reality. Fighting games? If I tried taking a master swordsman on one-on-one then I would probably have my arse handed to me in 5 seconds flat. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1931 Joined: 9 Sep 2008 | You need an interest in the sport itself before you can really get into sports games. Fifa bored me to tears, but Fight Night never ceased to enthrall and entertain me. To all those of the get-out-and-do-it logic, you seem to miss the point of gaming. Sit down, have a serious think about it, then let us all retire this tired old argument. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 947 Joined: 7 Aug 2008 | I use to buy football games but on the 360 there haven't really been any that caught my eye. The games are fun that's why I would get them. Working your team out, dealing with injuries and trading, fun stuff. And the actual game does make sense. Most people can't just go out and play a football game because either they don't know enough people who would wanna get a game going, or there a skinny 130 pound nerd who would get creamed on the field. |

well, is going around killing things with swords isnt something someone can do, that would be breaking laws, on top of that it would lack story plot. in an fps, seeing how many times i die, how would i like to go out and die for my country, i like fps games, but in reality, if i were to join the army, i wouldnt have checkpoints, respawn times, i know that if i were to die out there, it would be done, but in a video game, i have bubble shields, guns with chainsaws on them, variety of enemies, and more importantly, if i die, it was only a game. i also like left 4 dead, but why dont i go out and kill zombies? because its not a real world aspect that i could accomplish. if i wanna play basket ball, all i have to do is rally the guys and go to the park, i dont need to be a pro, i just need to have a ball. |

Sports games have a PLOT? Where the hell have I been? I'll go see how the story mode in Madden's doing right now... Not to sound like a smart-mouth, and I apologize if I did, but if you're not into sports, then it's really hard to see the differences from year to year, I agree. Which is why I tend to only buy one game per sport per console generation (example: only had one hockey game for PS2, only have one for PS3) and just do roster updates. I get the graphical upgrades, and I get to do some micromanaging at the same time. |

Well maybe those people don't feel like going out to play a sport? It could be terrible weather for it or something else. |

you like go carts??? lol |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1001 Joined: 26 Jun 2008 | Playing a sport game and playing a sport differs a lot, you don't use one to replace the other. And as far as story goes, far from all games have one so it's not typical for sports games. I can give you that the yearly releases are ridiculous though, don't play sports games myself unless it's racing. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2079 Joined: 1 Jan 2008 |
Go carting usually involves paying for each race. Why not just pay for one game and race as much as you like? |
Muckraker Posts: 268 Joined: 12 Dec 2008 | So, who else took his post count into thought before anything else? >_> Seriously, I've created, maybe one thread in the gaming forum. Seriously kids, learn to lurk. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 71 Joined: 15 Aug 2008 | okay, i understand that you cant win the super bowl, the stanley cup, etc... but in real life, you can strive for that, my arguement is that you can achieve something impossible to accomplish in the real world, even if it seems impossible, if you REALLY worked as hard as you could, it would be possible to become a pro in "insert sport here". |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1412 Joined: 19 Nov 2008 | Sports games are the only genre I don't play. I don't have a great relationship with MMO's and RTS's but that's a different story. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 800 Joined: 25 Nov 2008 | I also do not like sports games, however your argument that kids are playing sports games rather than playing sports outside is flawed in that if they weren't playing sports games they might be playing other games and the one has nothing to do with the other. You might as well say that if these kids weren't playing sports games they would be outside killing ants with magnifying glasses. |

ahh, you have a point. but then, there isnt any real demanding story plot that drives you in, i mean n4s nowadays for example is just, "you got beef? lets solve our problems by street racing"... maybe not, thats a little biased, and i guess there is more environment to racing games then other sports games, but then again i am not a fan of racing, but i guess racing games arent as bad as i see most sports games. |

the reason i hate sports games is that everytime i see a sports game, it isnt any different from last years model, the story plot is, "your team wins!!!" and instead of kids actually going out and playing sports, they stay inside and watch a tv play sports. i love video games based on the fact that they can take you to do things and worlds and make you in a sense experience something new. i even like rpg games that have ridiculously long and repeatitve fight sequences if they offer to me a unique story line and original concepts. but i cant get this from sports games, racing games, or any other game that takes you through the same crap you can do at anytime without a console. what do you think?
