My question is about the Weighted Companion Cube. Sorry for spoiler cover, but I don't want to ruin story aspects for others.

Yeah, I don't get what the big deal is with the Companion Cube, he was only good for the one level he was in and I was actually relieved to get rid of him, because I was sick of having to carry him wherever I went.

It's funny, I'm not attached to it but I do think its funny. Plus the comments GLaDOS makes about it are funny.

This thread is a lie.
Sorry.

The Love of the Companion cube is partially satirical. It's also typical of any particular media's "Culture" to latch onto little pieces of "gold" like this and turn it into a meme.

Just ignore it.

I was afraid to throw the cube in for one reason, and one reason only. I thought she was trying to trick me. I thought I might need it later. (I kept a portal in the room with the missile launcher for longer than humanly possible too, for just that reason.)

No relation other than that though.

Nope, no connection here. The whole thing was hilarious, but I just tossed the cube into the incinerator like I was told to. I have, shockingly, only just played through the game despite having the Orange Box for nearly a year now.

Loved every second, especially when the "thing" dropped off GLaDOS and she said that if I loved that thing so much why don't I marry it. For some reason that cracked me up.

Apparently, during testing, before the hearts and the Companion were added, people kept leaving the cube at the stairs, despite being told to keep the cube with them, then being forced to run all the way back to get the thing. So they decided to throw in the Companion angle to encourage people to take the thing with them.

i thought the whole thing was just supposed to be dark humor. Sort of showing how little GLaDOS thought of humans and their emotional attachments. I don't think you or the character were supposed to form an attachment to the cube, after all, everyone before you apparently went insane and scribbled on the walls, so is it surprising that some of them may have imagined the cube talking to them?

Uh... meh. I thought it was a useful shield against plas grenades, but that's about it.

"Companion" sphere my ass, that thing doesn't even have hearts on it. It's just a regular sphere, it doesn't love me!

Exactly. Most people aren't really attached to the cube, it's mostly a joke. I and no other gamer had any real connection with it.

you mean she right?, unless you and the cube...you know..swing the hook around the...other side...you know..in the back side...like you know...gay! Not that there is anything wrong with a gay companion cube. I mean its not like a problem or anything. I mean, i dont do it that way myself, but i fully support you and your cubes decisions, and may you both find happiness in your lifestyle choices, or should i say just you, since you apparently, murdered! your cube in cold blood!!

You do realize the main character is a girl?

yes yes i know, i was just trying to amuse myself(i guess), why so serious? :P

i liked the advent of the companion cube simply because it was a great method of ridiculing games that force you to have some sort of supporting character that you would absolutely care for, even to the point where throwing that character into an incinerator would generate nothing more than a mere "meh", or perhaps a "sweet"

The companion cube is effectively a meme. Valve even started selling a plush toy incarnation. Jesus.

The companion cube was funny if you found a secret room with obssesive scribblings about it.

Maybe you missed it.

A little off-topic, but what happened to the weighted companion cube car dice?! I decided earlier this week I was going to blow $25 and get them, but now to my surprise they're gone from the store. Does anybody know why?

I formed a slight bond with the companion cube, but thats probably because of all the love surrounding it i saw before actually playing the game, i felt i had t love the thing before we even started.

I found myself more attached to the first piece of GLADoS than with the companion cube, you know the one that's like "What's that? Oh, what's THAT? That thing has numbers on it. Who are you?..." etc. I loved that little guy/gal!

I didn't feel anything for the cube and had no qualms about incinerating it. What I did enjoy were the things Glados said about it, because they were both funny and bizarre(which added to the funny)

My favorite being:

"The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak."

And of Course,

"There was even going to be a party for you. A big party, that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend, the Companion Cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him."

Never was attached to the cube, I actually just ran around with it and would some times use it to block the sentry gun's fire

I formed an attachment to it (more notibly after I was informed it would never threaten to stab me), but I only recently discovered the wonders of Portal - I was aware of the meme without the context.

I don't think 'Ahhhh I get it now!' is acceptible enough to legitmately answer your question, but I did like the cube.

Didn't stop me burning the little guy without hesitation.
