Im actually looking foward to Alpha Protocal.

The action/adventure thing seems to be #1, plus I like being an agent(close enough to mercenarie).

Also, although 08' had some disappointments, 2009 could be a year for quality alone, with every anticipated game being pure gold.
Unlikely, but the stage is possibly set for it

Halo Wars. You were saying?

Oops, I forgot! Excluding that, of course. Halo Recon or whatever it is could either be good or suck really hard

Was there something about Halo Wars that was not good? I must have missed that part.

EDIT: Oops, put an extra "something."

It could work, but it doesn't look very balanced or polished, although I will reserve final judgement for it

Borderlands, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Mass Effect 2. I'm good.

You're looking foward to Aliens: Colonial Marines - no you're not.

This is what I don't get - every adventure game since the beginning of time has been ripping off Indiana Jones, so why do people think the actual Indiana Jones game will somehow be better than all the others? A licensed game grants the subject matter, but as the matter in question isn't all that special....

Bullshit.

God Of War III is coming out in 2009. This trumps every single one of 2008's releases in pure awesome.

Agreed.

Also, Skate 2? Nobody mentioned Skate 2?

I'm not holding my breath for God of War III this year. I don't think it will be released until Q2 2010 (though I will happily eat those words if proven wrong).

Resident Evil 5 is my big ticket for 2009. Also, BioShock 2 (though I think that's in the same boat as GoW3).

I dunno. Gameplay footage more than a year before the release doesn't sound that likely. Plus, Jaffe said that he's already seen way higher quality stuff, so its a lot further on than they let on.

theres really nothing im looking forward to anything major in 2009, maby half life 2 ep 3(though who knows when that will be), and maybe kingdom hearts 3 if thatwas coming out. im a kid gamer at heart, so im also looking towards the DSi and pkmn platinum, though not hugely. i guess 2009 has the poential to be good after all. though that just potential.

EDIT: wait, prototype also looks promising.

What? Adventure games? You mean games like these? Or these?

From what I've seen X-blades is supposedly pretty good. Ignore the scantily-clad part.

What the hell is X blades anyway?

X-Blades is an anime inspired hack and slash. The mechanics seem to be akin to Devil may cry (Sword moves, guns, magical stuff). Looks really pretty, but has this aura of shallowness about it. Time will tell

God of War 3 is certainly on the list, as well as Darksiders:Wrath of War and the big one, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. Really looking forward to 2009, my wallet is not.

Add White Knight Chronicles to the list of (English) releases.

no 2009 won't be a drought of exciting titles.

I was more meaning Action Adventure. Tomb Raider. Uncharted. All that stuff.

Eh, even without exciting titles, great stuff will come out. Look at World of Goo, for an example from the past year. By the way, I've heard that Valve is fixing (messing with) the source engine, so HL2: Ep.3 is a looooong way off.

You can't really say Bayonetta "rips off" Devil May Cry, when the guys doing it are mostly old Devil May Cry vets.

That we do. Although I like the look of Bayonetta since that has the potential to thrill me like Devil May Cry did (the original). If Devil May Cry 1 was remade for the PS3 instead of having that damn DMC4, I would be a happy man. I really am hungering for a hack and slash game that isn't toss, and that offers a challenge with a certain "WOW!!" factor.

Well, fair enough I guess, but still...In the same way that Jim Carey recycling Liar Liar and calling it The Yes Man doesn't excuse it, see what I'm saying?

The release date is my main concern. I am not too optimistic about the idea of a 2009 release. Don't get me wrong, if they can get it to an amazing standard and release it in 2009, I would be nerdgasming enough for the entire human race, but I would never want Sony to sacrifice quality for an early release.

I guess I'm also impatient since I played the last 2 God of Wars and Devil May Cry 1 a while back.

I'm looking forward to Skate 2. EA Black Box did a real good job with the first, so I'm hoping the second will be just as good as the first.

That, and Halo Wars. Please do a good job Ensemble. I'd be sad to see you leave on a bad note.

No chance. As soon as Ensemble got the finger from Microsoft half the staff got offered jobs at a new company once the doors closed and the other half walked. Everyone left at ensemble has been pulling 14 hour days just to get the thing finished. You think it'll be anywhere near as polished as it needs to be, given that console-based RTS games are pretty much doomed from the start?

There's a few I'm looking forward to that haven't been mentioned. Empire Total War is due rather soon and the previews look damn good. No reason that Battlefield Heroes shouldn't make it out in 2009 either. There's the Ghostbusters game hopefully in June, Mafia 2 in the autumn, Postal 3, Operation Flashpoint 2, The Sims 3, possible a new Wolfenstein, and with any luck Star Wars: The Old Republic.

And how has everyone forgotten Beyond Good and Evil 2? I see a tonne of Trico speculation (not just from me, mind you), but another sequel to an underselling gem of a game comes out next year, and no-one thinks of it.

I'm noticing that the people who keep saying that 2009 has no good games are the 360 owners. Just putting it out there.

Duke Nukem Forever...*cough*

After all of this time and fiddling around with engines and whatnot I don't honestly think that DNF can be as good as everyone (myself included) wants it to be. Too long of a buildup leads straight to disinterest.

RE5 is looking pretty sweet, along with FFXIII and the new KH games.

I'm not sure Mass Effect 2 will actually get released this year (apparently they're not very far into development), but it does sound pretty sweet, especially the part where you can preserve your save files and continue on from the first game.

That is exactly why I haven't paid any attention to it since 1999. *puts blinders back over eyes* I should really get something to muffle the noises I keep hearing though...*grabs headsets as well*

Conversely, you could say that the people looking forward to titles due to come out in 2009 are PS3 owners... because they'll finally have games to play. :P

In all seriousness though, I've been so occupied with the assload of games that came out in the last quarter of '08 that I just haven't been looking ahead. And while I was joking with that above volley from the troll fanboy arsenal, I do think that Sony has been doing more hyping of the titles they're going to be releasing because it is such a popular opinion in the gaming industry that the PS3 has fewer worthwhile games on it - Sony need to give people a reason to buy one, since the bloody thing didn't launch with a Final Fantasy title ready to roll.

That theory fails when we look at the 2008 line up - realistically speaking, 2008 was better for the Ps3. LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles, etc etc - there were a high amount of great exclusives for the Ps3 that somehow get discounted from any and all tallies for seemingly being on the Ps3.

I can sorta see what you're saying, but realistically, these games would be awesome no matter when they came out - even in the days when the last great console was still current, God Of War was undoubtedly king. You can't exactly deny that the Ps3's 2009 line up looks especially good, and the 360's looks especially - well, if I say it, it will be branded as fanboy-speak, but they're leading the year with a console RTS made by a staff with very low morale.

The quality of those titles is highly debateable. They all have their vocal fanatics, don't get me wrong! But they're not the system-selling, competition crushing monsters that Sony needed them to be.
The problem is, I own a PS3 and out of those four games I've played 2. Both LBP and Resistance 2 disappointed me, and did not live up to even cynical expectations. LBP is particular was very short-lived - friends who during the week of launch were praising its charm and creativity and fun... and then stopped talking about it.
The people I know who played MGS4 were either massive MGS fans and loved it, massive MGS fans and hated it, or newcomers who got fed up with it.

The only game from your list that seems to be getting sustained attention and near-universal praise is Valkyria Chronicles - a game I've been fascinated by from a distance since I started seeing gameplay videos some months ago, well before I owned a PS3. I may well pick it up over the weekend, simply because my friends are offering some compelling arguments. I certainly wouldn't have noticed it if they didn't tell me about it.

But if those four titles were meant to be your heavyweight evidence to support a suggestion that 2008 was anything but another disappointing year for the PS3, I'm afraid it's time to throw in the towel.

I think 2009 will be a good year for the PS3 - but I also think there is a lot that Microsoft is keeping in reserve merely because they can afford to.
