It seems the vast majority of threads popping up around all focus too much on the bad. Everyones talking about what games they expect to fail in 2009, and generally how games this past year havn't been all that great.

So I propose in this thread we start to turn that frown upside down and focus on those parts of games that we really enjoyed.

I'll start with Mirror's Edge. Whilst frustrating at times, it felt and looked really amazing when you nailed a series of moves perfectly without any cockups.

Guitar Hero World Tour was a pretty shameless rip-off of Rock Band, but it's the most competent one, and the setlist is still enjoyable, albeit rather easy.

All the frustrations I had with Prince of Persia's sticking controls, hand-holding gameplay and terrible combat were always silenced by how fucking pretty it is.

In Castle Crashers there were some problems with the 2d plane's collision detection but it didn't matter because I was having so much fun in the game that a few minor uses like that were nothing to silence the pure entertainment value of the game.

Wow, a positive thread. I'm game.

In 2009, I'm optimistic that Batman: Arkham Asylum, Punch-Out, and Madworld will all be really good and on my shelf. In fact, I'm REALLY looking forward to those three.

To echo a previous statement, Guitar Hero World Tour is a lot better than some say it is, and I don't care if it's a Rock Band ripoff - it's a GOOD ripoff.

I'm also hopeful that DC Universe Online comes out sometime before I die.

Dragon Quest V and IX, Sands of Destruction and Suikoden Tierkries have me all awash with RPG filled glee at the DS release schedule. Similarly the fact that Dragon Age is supposed to come out in '09 also has me feeling groovy.

It will be a grand year for the RPGer, and will be made grander by the release of FFXIII, which while it probably won't make any new converts to the series, will likely be more than palitable to longtime FF fans.

I enjoyed playing Fallout 3, even though the ending kinda sucked and there was only one character that I liked. The game was great fun :D

I'm really, really looking forward to Skate 2 and Prototype, I can't wait to get my 360 back from repairs. I also love bacon sandwiches.

Well, for me, I'm actually getting hyped about a game. I haven't done that in ages.
What game? Skate 2. Played EA's demo and hated it, but loved the game, but not the bloody demo timer! I haven't seen demo timers since the PS1!

I think they put that in because they didn't have a timer in the demo for the first game, and people figured out how to leave the demo area, so they basically gave away the entire game, albeit without the story etc.

Despite the fact that people rage quit 5 minutes after a versus match of L4D makes the game very annoying, and levels are somewhat repetitive the overall game play is still amazing in nearly every sense.

TBH, this seems more of a passive aggressive, backhanded complements thread, but whatever.

Wow, I totally forgot about Arkham Asylum. It looks good.

Who was the character? Moira? Three Dog? Dad?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to ME2 (if indeed the release date rumors are true), F.E.A.R 2, Alpha Prtotocol, and Prototype. They all seem great.

Say what you will about RTS's BELONGING to the almighty PC, but I believe Halo Wars will be a good RTS for the Xbox 360...maybe not the best, but good nonetheless.

To echo darrinwright, Batman: Arkham Asylum looks, pardon the play on words, insanely wicked to play. I mean, come on! Its Arkham Asylum...with the Joker in charge!

I'd also like to add that I'm optimistic that Halo 3: ODST/RECON will break the mold of Halo games...That is, making it more about tatics abd stealth.

Having tried the Lord of THe Rings: COnquest demo...I'm confident it'll do good.

Destroy All Humans: Path of THe Furon, despite the flaming it gets from certain gaming sites (-Glares at IGN-), plays on a much larger scale then the first two...Plus, calling in an F5 tornado, watching other aliens land and start tearing up the helpless humans in the city that you are in, while you're flying over in stealth mode never loses its charm.

Mass Effect 2! Woo!
You know, I saw a used copy of the first one for...get this...$14.99. CANADIAN dollars! I couldn't believe it. It was so very very cheap. Crazy!

Also: Forza 3! Loved the first two, excited about the new one!

I loved Need For Speed: Undercover, and I usually hate Need For Speeds shitting physics. This game was unbelievably awesome.

Games I am looking forward to in 2009... I don't even know, probably The Old Republic, DESPITE being an MMO... I think it could overcome the MMO craptacular reputation and be fucking awe-inspiring.

(If I get a laptop that is MUCH better than mine this year, Red Alert 3, Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2 are all on the top of my must buy list.)

parts of games this year that were really great:

condemned: bloodshot... both chase scenes and the sickening torture chamber level

fallout 3: dicovering rivet city for the first time, especially if you arrive at nighttime... epic

fable 2: the prisoner food choice

dead space: the boss battles (and pretty much the whole game apart from the meteor bit)

prince of persia: the ending

Mass Effect 2, both Halo games, Blood Bowl, Arkham Asylum, Lord of the Rings Conquest, Dawn of War II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are the games I'm looking forward to the most in 2009. As for last year, Fable 2 was quite good, and Mirror's Edge was fun once you found the good bits (speed runs are my favourite). Oh yes, and on a particularly positive note I've actually started to enjoy playing Oblivion.

Forgot about that... I really need to pick up a copy of it at some point.

Good thread, I just played through still life, as writhe with game-play, legibility, and writing problems as the game was, the cinematics were top notch and the art was incredibly beautiful.

Also, love Fallout 3, I can even forgive it for making those giant bugs that gives me the creeps. :)

The game that every single review I read said was crap but I found good was Haze, admittedly the online does majorly suck and its rather short but apart from that it was a game I throughly enjoyed. For 2009 I'm looking forward to Empire: Total War and Dawn of war II both of which should be good.

Even though STALKER was a terrible, terrible video game adaptation of Roadside Picnic, it was still a totally awesome game. (Both games.)

Even though the film adaptation of Roadside Picnic slated for completion in 2010 has John Travolta in it and will probably include way too many action scenes and explosions, I still can't wait to see it, and will probably go see the first showing in my area. It's actually the only movie I'm really looking forward to right now... wait, no... "9" looks pretty appealing...

EDIT: And yeah, so far, this thread seems more about pointing out good points of things despite their flaws, which balances out to 'neutral,' instead of 'positive.'

I really enjoyed Fallout 3. Exploring every inch and finding every location sucks away so much time, but the world is so atmospheric and immersive, I can't stop.

Also, I'll say it: I like Sonic Unleashed on the 360. The camera was a can of farts, and the coin-collecting was a stupid idea, but I have to say that the gameplay is some of the best platforming I've played outside in a long time, and it has one of my favorite soundtracks of any game.

Its refreshing how a game can be so good when its so simple in principle...grab some mates and shoot stuff :)

Me too!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R was awesome ...when it was stable.
Lords of The Realms III was very nice, a tad unique and interesting. When it was stable.
Z: Steel Soldiers was also very, very deliciously good and humorous when it was stable.
Maelstrom was good when it wasn't on.

Is that positive...?

I was worried about the character change when playing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (a game I got a week or two ago) but I love the game! Especially the Prosecutor (Playing air guitar in the middle of a trial? That rocks :D)!
