I consider it firmly an RPG. That said, here's some blasphemy: I didn't think Fallout's ending was very good. I'm not going to spoil anything here, but I was definitely underwhelmed. I also regret not finishing all the sidequests I would liked to have done, but I guess that'll change when they release the 360 dlc. Both games have big, big flaws, and lots and lots of greatness, but I think Oblivion was better.
It's an RPG because Headshots aren't instakills, why? Because the enemies have HP. Also weapons deal more damage with higher skills, it would be more apparent if they didn't have level scaling.
first off the poll is not a yes or no question. and second it is an FPS with RPG aspects
I'd say it's the other way around.
... Both? Though it leans a lot more to the RPG side, with skills, armour and all that. If all of that were stripped out it'd be a bit of a bare-bones FPS. Also, confusing poll. You ask "which is it more," but then give "yes" and "no" as choices.
RPG and fix the poll. | |
Well, lets see: FPS point-and-shoot 3D gameplay? Check. Yup, it's a FPS/RPG. Stop being thick.
Hit yes when I wanted to hit no. Oh well. My reasoning is that the real time combat is very unpolished in favor of VATS. It is really just an RPG. I did not feel the FPS aspect because even in real time, your accuracy appears altered by RPG percentages.
Its both...Just because headshots don't mean instakill its still a FPS. First Person Shooter, *plays in first person and shoots stuff* Okay, theres that. Role Playing Game, *chats with one of the locals and adjusts Stats and clothing* yup, looks like an FPS/RPG hybrid.
That discribes Bioshock more than Fallout 3. Fallout 3 has just as much RPG in it as FPS, levels, skills, choice, why do you see it as only having aspects?
First person shooter with RPG elements.
So... there can only be one FPS with RPG elements? Still, this poll is idiotic. There's no suggestion that Fallout 3 is anything but an FPS/RPG. You might as well ask "Is soccer a ball sport?" Gee, I wonder.
I consider it a RPG because the FPS combat is very clunky, without VATS to smooth it over it would have been a poor game. I'm hoping it will be improved in the future or at least in the sequel. If the combat was a bit smoother i would consider it a FPS with RPG elements but right now its not. Even Deux Ex 10 years ago had smoother (non vats) combat.
Since I play most of the game in *third person*, I would hardly consider it a "first person" anything.
RPG with fps elements. | |
When did I say that? | |
You implied it:
The inference is that because the term describes another game more closely than Fallout 3, it's not a suitable term for Fallout 3. In reality, it can easily describe both.
It's an RPG with FPS aspects. The entire combat system is more dependant on skill levels and gear than on pointing the gun just right, and the combat is the only FPSish part of it. Actually, it's an FPRPG :)
with the VATS system you can basically make it turn based too
What the hell else would you call it? Flight Simulation? I mean, you're a camera behind a gun and a multi-page character sheet.
I consider it an FPSRPG with XTC, LBP TwiddleyDee influences & a hint of some other pointless threadcreating acronym debate inducing trio of capitol letters
Imagine you're playing it in third person view with bare fists and never using a gun. Would you call it a boxing game? The point I'm getting at: it's an RPG in which you happen to be able to use guns. The choice of view negates the FP-anything side of it.
I would say rpg with fps elements. Twitch skills take a back seat to your skill with any particular type of firearm.
I think that it is both. | |
If we can consider Bioshock an FPSRPG then I think Fallout 3 falls into the category easily enough.
I think so, although one could argue otherwise since the game can be viewed from multiple perspectives.
Bioshock wasn't really an rpg at all. Fallout 3 is an RPG/FPS (predominately rpg with fps elements). While I still think Fallout 3 was massively flawed and typical of a Bethesda game it wasn't anywhere near as bad as Bioshock.
Fallout 3 is an RPG with guns mixed in, not that I'm complaining. The amount of choices you have when leveling up is just amazing. Love the different perks and skills you can choose. But the shooting is just horrible, guns don't feel heavy at all.
I would say, just from what I've seen and played of the game,
To your question a question: Does it really matter? It's still fun.
No, Bioshock was just an FPS where you could by weapons and skills.
I think it is Oblivion with guns. Ohohohohohoho. In all seriousness, it is more or less an RPG. There are many menu based systems, and most actions, even in real time, are determined by stats. It has some FPS aspects, but as previously stated, its success is determined by your stats. Fallout 3 may have less RPG elements than its predecessors, but it is still an RPG.
No it doesn't, you can remove the RGP parts of bioshock and there will still be a game. You will have a hard time making one, and the logic you use will be flawed but you can do it. You can't take the RPG out of Fallout 3 and still pull together a game. So it isn't a FPS with RPG parts. Also if you say a tomato is yellow, and I say the discripes a bananna more than a tomato, am I saying only a bananna is yellow? No, because thats stupid.
It is first-person and you shoot stuff with guns but it also features a character creator and most of the elements commonly associated with RPGs, so do you?
