"Hunter Clad in Metal" as the space pirates call her...
... but she still has my vote. I don't care if she ain't a marine. XD
Well, what definition are we running on with "space marine?" Anything in Power armour? Or actual affiliation with a space military, etc.?
Not just space military, a member of the Space Marines, the troops who would be designated to be transported by the Space Navy to be deposited on the Place Where Shit Happens. Hence, the Master Chief can't be suggested as a Space Marine, because he works for the Space Navy. Like wise, a Space Bounty Hunter is also an invalid option.
Personally, I'd go with Rico. You should all know who I'm talking about.
I have to point out to the Halo people that Master Chief is not a Space Marine at all. Heres why, he is in the Navy you can tell by the fact that his rank is Master Chief Petty Officer, he is a Space Super Navy SEAL. All of the other people you fight along side of in the game, other than the Elites are Space Marines in that they are Marines who are deployed from Space.
PirateKing: I'll say Master Chief. He was the first space marine I knew.
Was that a joke post?
Nah. I know there's a lot of Halo hate here but I stand by what I said. The guy saved the human race for Pete's sake.
He's not a space marine. He's in the Navy.
Yeah, Space Navy! Navy = Water. Water = marine(s). Seriously though, Gordon Freeman isn't either of those and people have been posting him. If you're gonna nitpick so much then why not do something about that? Anyone who wears armor and shoots aliens in space is close enough to be called a space marine.

They said Freeman doesn't count.
Cpl Adrian Shepard would though.
I hit the quote button on accident... like an idiot so i edited it.

Alright then. I'm glad we agree that he's technically not a space marine.

Sergeant Major Johnson is a space marine. Master Chief Petty Officer is the equivalent of a Space Navy SEAL.

He only could count if we were going off of super armored awesomeness.
I think the first space marines were actually the Space Marines from Warhammer in its 1st edition, not the Doom guy. I may be wrong but hasn't Warhammer been around for longer than Doom? (Warhammer 40K started in 1987, Doom was made in 1993)

So did Doomguy, he saved Earth multiple times from the invading Demons....well it fell sorta once....
Is that what everyone calls him? Doomguy? That's funny. I've never played a Doom game actually. I'd go out on a limb and say they're not as good as Halo though. I like playing as someone who is someone though. You know what I mean? Not just, "Doomguy." I don't know why it's so popular in shooters today to not characterize the guy we're playing as.

Okay, fine. Jeez. Nitpick why don't ya. He's just a frickin super soldier that fights aliens, gosh.

I like them doing that because I like coming up with the back story, it helps me get into the game more. And well Master Chief only ever goes by his rank in the games ever... I don't care that the books have his name be John.

Okay. I always thought of space marine as a pretty general term. I don't think Ripley was technically a marine but a lot of guys picked her. At least not in the first movie.
Though I sympathize with your choice Lyiat- Ripley doesn't count...she wasn't a Marine...she was brought on in "Aliens" as a consultant. Although you wanted to like Hicks, and Hudson was just plain funny, I would have to say Vasquez was easily the biggest badass in that group and most believable.

I don't count her as a Space Marine either, only the United Systems(I think thats the meaning)Colonial Marines count from those movies.

Look...I always thought of Space Marine as a general term. A soldier that fights aliens in space/other planets. If it helps end this fucking firestorm then I'll just say Johnson is my favorite space "marine."

The books are good by the way. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I just like to be someone rather that someone with no personality who is for some reason much stronger than any of the other characters. At least Master Chief has a reason for why he's so powerful.

I'm not going into the Halo sucks rant because that's off topic. Back in the days of Doomguy, backstory wasn't a big thing in shooters, that's just how it was, they said you're a space marine and demons are invading...kill them.

I remember a day when people were brave enough to say they liked Halo. Those days were nice. I didn't grow up in the days of Doomguy. I grew up watching anime and reading books and playing platformers and stuff. I just like characterization and I think it's wierd when characters are totally passive when people are talking to them. I like to hear a "Let's go" or something.
So, in summary, "the greatest space marine" doesn't work very well on the grounds that space marines belong to sketchy fictional organizations and it's hard to tell who belongs to what.
The Emperor -- Is he a space marine, or is he an emperor now? X Shephard -- He's described as a "Soldier" or possibly one of the other classes, and a Spectre, but not a Space Marine. Samus -- She's a freelance bounty hunter, really. Master Chief -- We've already covered that. Really, nobody is specifically called a "Space Marine" in Halo, but they're probably all under a space marine umbrella (or do you think Space Marines wouldn't have ranks?) Rico (?) -- There's a few Ricos in anime, and neither are specifically Space Marines.
According to Wikipedia, here's our choice of Space Marines:
Aliens Series (1986-1997) - United States Colonial Marines
Babylon 5 (1994-1998) - EarthForce Marine Corps (also known as "Gropos" or "GROund POunderS")
Command & Conquer series(1995-present) Global Defense Initiative
Doom series (1993 - present) - the United States Space Marine Corps
Falkenberg's Legion series (1976-1993) - The CoDominium Marines
Ground Control (2000) - Crayven Corporation's Marines unit.
Halo Series (2001-Present) - UNSC Marine Corps, UNSC ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) Corps.
Heritage Trilogy, Legacy Trilogy, Inheritance Trilogy (1998-present) - United States Marines Corps, United Star Marine Corps
Killzone series (2003-present) Interplanetary Strategic Alliance Marines
Lensman series (1937) - Galactic Marines
Metroid (1986-present) - the Galactic Federation Marine Corps
Outwars (1998) - Colonial Marines
Quake Series (1996-present)
Rolling Thunder - (2008) - Martian Naval Corps
Space: Above and Beyond (1995) - United States Marine Corps Space Aviator Cavalry
Space Marines (1996) - A United Planets Marine hostage rescue team battles space pirates
Starblazers (1972) - Ground combact units found on the 11th planet.
StarCraft (1998) - Confederate Marine Corps later succeeded by the Dominion Marine Corps. Other corps include the Alliance Marine Corps, the United Earth Directorate Powered Infantry and numerous more.
Starfire series - Federation Navy Marine Corps
StarFist series - Confederation Marine Corps
Stargate Atlantis - US Marines are attached to the Atlantis Expedition as security forces, referred to as 'Space Marines' by Expedition members.
Star Wars - Galactic Marines of the Grand Army of the Republic originally known as the 21st Nova Corps was an elite unit that was created as the Grand Army of the Republic diversified during the Clone Wars. The unit was commanded by Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi and Clone Commander Bacara.
The Mote in God's Eye (1975) and related novels - Imperial Marines
Warhammer 40,000 (1987-present) - Imperial Space Marine Chapters, and also to an extent Chaos Space Marines.
Wing Commander Franchise (1990-1999) - Terran Confederation Marine Corps
Amongst those I'm familiar with from that list, I'm thinking the Warhammer 40k are probably the "greatest" at least in term of hardcore butch-ness. Genetically engineered, power-armored badasses. The only trouble is picking out a specific one -- as I just covered, calling the Emperor a mere Space Marine is likely to get you lynched as a heretic. After that, you're pretty much looking at as many overzealous He-Men as grains of sand on a beach.
PirateKing: I remember a day when people were brave enough to say they liked Halo. Those days were nice.
Come on, wash the sand out of your craw here and just let it go. No one's doing a "Halo sucks" rant, there's no call for you to basically call them out as cowards and liars. Halo isn't too popular on these boards. What can you do?
Especially in this instance where you can't pick Master Chief because he is not a marine. It has nothing to do with liking/disliking the franchise. Just let it drop.
