No Team Fortress? Shame, TC, shame.
TF2 is the epitome of multiplayer FPSs in my honest opinion.

I can't decide between Halo and Half-Life

I could beat Halo and the multiplayer is the best. but Half-Life has a better story and graphics.

Looking at it from a purely "Shooter" aspect, Call of Duty is my favorite. For matters of story, entertainment and just overall fun, I'd go with Half-Life and the multitude of parts that accompany it (TF2, Portal, etc).

Half Life hands down

It's hard for me to say really. Doom was my first FPS series and it holds a special place. Half-Life is certainly a better series, all things considered.

Doom was my first, too. From a purely nostalgic standpoint, I voted for that.

Either Half-Life or No One Lives Forever. I love those two franchises.

NOLF was such a great series. I played the first one but not the second. Was it better than the first?

PureChaos:
no Metroid Prime on the list? it's legendary

You're damn right it's legendary, but unfortunately the prime series was FPA (first person adventure) so it doesn't count.

I think you should put an other option, because I almost couldn't vote on account of there being no Timesplitters in that list, but I will go for Duke Nukem.

Half-Life, I guess.

But the Metroid FPS's are really good, too.

I never considered the Metroid series as FPS.

1. The first four were side scrollers.
2. Way too many puzzles

A console ago I would of said rainbow six, but that franchise has been going down hill and COD2 + COD4 rocked my socks off.

Good to see my boy Half Life in the lead. Although I am amiss to see the lack of counter strike up there and URT.

There is no best FPS franchise there can only be one supreme FPS, and it is called 'Goldeneye: 007.' 'Nuff said.

I'm going to give the nod to Half-Life, mainly because of all the things it spawned; all the mods, as well as being the first game to really showcase "whoa realistic like physics."

Although this poll is very open. Best with regards to what? Most innovative? Most enduring? Best multiplayer? There are many ways to evaluate an FPS as to what makes it best. For my own criteria, I'd probably put Halo as number 2, just because I've gotten so much mileage out of that game playing with friends, even though it's hardly as inventive or revolutionary as some claim.

I don't play very many FPSs, but the whole Orange Box was pretty much the best 20$ I've spent.

That is because gears is a TPS not FPS

These threads don't last long on the boards. Usually with the locking mod adding a message along the lines of "I'm sure you meant favorite FPS, not best."

While the other nominees are good, every Series except Half-Life failed me at one point or another.

Half-Life (1, the expansions, 2, the Episodes) however is always fun, and if it stops being fun for some reason, you just get some mods and make it fun again (i recommend "Synergy", an excellent mod where you can break the single player campaign with other people from all over the world. Pure Madness!)

Its not here to create arguements, more to provoke ideas on what people really think.
Metroid is a good series, thanks for the input

Provoke typically implies a negative response, as in the kind that would spur an argument. Never mind that the most people here don't like *which is your favorite" "what do you think is best" "what is the best" type of threads. At all. They're really frowned upon. Especially when there is ten dozen of the mother's that could easily be found with the search button, and the poster neglects to use the proper grammar.

Ok lets just wrap up this thread.

1)Unreal Tounements have such a lame story and focused too much on multiplayer that i didnt really deem them as good as the like of the COD's and Half Lifes which have great story and mulitiplayer (if counting TF2 and half life teamdeathmatch on pc for half life)

2)Quake is great and yes i agree i should of put that on the poll

3)Timesplitters is also a classic and if the space permitted it would have been on their, in my opinion its flame tag/infection is probably the funnest game mode to play with friends.

4)All soldier of fortunes are inferior in nearly everyway to any of the series on the poll.

5)Yes Duke Nukem isnt really a series but its up their because it is a classic, and has very similar gameplay as Doom which has a formula for fun :)

6)Never played No One Lives Foever so i cant really comment on that.

7)Gears isnt an FPS.

8) Although not a series as such, GoldenEye on the N64 is the benchmark of quality and in many peoples opinions is the best FPS of all time.

and finally to sum up, as different people prefer gameplay and mutiplayer over story or graphics over cool new modes or features, it is really hard to suggest one that ticks all the boxes. Im not a Valve fan boy, but The Orange Box has all the FPS action ud ever want, with the compelling story of Half Life, crazy fun multiplayer of TF2 and although not technically a shooter as such, Portal for its mind blowing puzzles.
Nuff said.

Several people have said gears of war isn't an FPS, so sorry and can people stop quoting that comment I made? Thanks
Like I said, I think Halo is one of the best, but I'm also looking to get Call of Duty 4 so maybe that will knock Halo off the top spot (at least, in my eyes...)

From hours played I going to go with TimeSplitters.

The series offers various gametypes.
The single player is extended due to the challenges.
The multiplayer is extended due to the mapmaker.

If the servers were still up I probably be playing this online.

If the staff cuts at FreeRadical haven't squashed the development(and there's no Haze holdover) I will be most up for TimeSplitters 4.

EDIT: Can you imagine they trophies/achievements this would have!

EDIT: If I could still handle the Goldeneye graphics, it'd be up there.

No One Lives Forever: A Spy in H.A.R.M.S Way is pretty darn good too, I actually enjoyed it as a shooter a bit more than the original. That said, the first game was a better overall product with a funnier script and tighter action sequences. Check it out.

I chose Half-Life after much consideration; I almost picked Battlefield, because that's where I've had the most fun (BF42, BF:VN, and BF2) out of all the lot but when I think of FPSes I think first and foremost of single-player experiences.
COD, especially COD1, comes the closest to second place.

Well... Half-Life was a pretty sweet game but... in terms of multiplayer? I think I'm going with Battlefield on this one.
