Infamous Scribbler Posts: 676 Joined: 16 Aug 2008 | This game is interesting, but I don't think I would want to play it. Also, there are too many musicians in the world to get everyones favourite, and some people would hate it just for that. I don't think it has potential to be fun, which is the most important thing in gaming in my opinion. |

It takes a certain kind of person to care about ratings and such to the extent of liking Manager games. Football Manager is considered one of the best and most consistent game series of all time, but hardly anyone knows it because really not many people in places where it counts like that kind of thing
How would you rate hardcore game ideas? Whatever; I said 'hard core' because I put alot of time into writing it, not because I thought the game was particularly formidable. Nichey in mordern times can still mean millions of copies sold |

Way I see it, 25% of $5 50,000 times is way better than 25% of $30 about three times (Getting it out onto retail shelves.) |

There is a reason football management games do well. Mainly because football, be it English or American, is one of if not the only major sport for a particular country. Management is much much more ingrained into the football idea. Every football fan worth his salt knows who the manager is for a few teams, and follows them. How many music fans can you think of that know the name of more than just the manager of their favourite band? In otherwords, football management games are about an aspect of football that is almost as well known as football itself, and is inherently accessible to millions of people. Music management? Not so much. Also, and I have been shot down before for this so I don't blame you, but saying that hardly anyone knows Football Manager is akin to lying out your arse. It may not seem like it, but it _does_ have millions of sales. |

I think you might have relized that there was a fault in your argument here; Music is definatly more popular than football. In many more countries than football is popular, music has been part of the culture (i'd be hard pressed to find a culture that didn't like music) for centuries, nay, millenia. And I'm sure millions of people would be attracted to a game about managing musicians.
Like I said earlier; in this world, even a nichy game gets millions of sales.
I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get this, but: Football Manager is to Fifa Manager, as urprobablyright's Music Manager is to Rock Tour/Kudos Rock Legend. |

Thankyou for missing my point, which was that in football, the idea of managing a team is as much a part of the game as the game itself. With music, management isn't as key in the masses minds. OK so people will be drawn towards it, but not in the numbers that football managers get. |

sorry about missing your point, i always get pissed when other people do that there's no excuse. I didn't read your whole post. my bad You have a good point there, and yeah it'd be a stumbling block that might mean that this series wouldn't quite reach the popularity of FM - but it would still be interesting |

Those are the only two music management games I've seen to date. While they may not have synced exactly with the OP design, just wanted to make a note of them. Given that there are already two titles in the genre, there's certainly a perceived market for them, though whether the actual market is large enough, really, has yet to be seen. If you want to do it right, I would suggest running the timeline from the '50s to the '70s or '80s. In the modern age, musicians are much smarter, while back in the '50s, the record industry is being built, including all the slimiest of characters and practices that go along with that. |

I've been walking alot since I left Beijing for Australia (not to say i didn't walk/bike ride alot in Beijing, everyone needs to maintain a sexy body) and while I've been walking I've been thinking.
One of the things I thought about was how cool it would be to create a sort of Football [soccer] Manager for musicians.
--Fantasy Musician Manager--
The Basic premise of this game is that you start out as the agent of a single music group. You can either choose to take over an already existent band (anyone from Joe Shmoe's Band to [some rapper] to Tool to Opeth) and guide them through tours/skills development/contract talks etc, bringing in new musicians to make your band perfect (i.e. Buying the lead singer of one group who you like and bringing him to another group who's music you dig for a fee based on real life valuations, what, $100 million - I know this almost never happens in real life but it would make the game interesting!)
The man-management aspect of the game would include you training different parts of your singer's singing style/stage skills at differing intensities to make him/her appeal most to their audience. Training drummers to bring in a more jazzy sound and having the game seamlessly update all the songs to lose a, say, heavy metal drum line and bring in a crisp jazzy hit-hat. haha!
Scout out young talent at high-school music shows/in upgradeable (from stinking to state-of-the-art facilities) recording studios! Keep your over-arching music label happy, stay employed and beat out rivals for big gig dates and crowd numbers!
You would raise your money by having your band perform well, choosing good song line ups, pleasing audiences, getting more famous and more money from contracts. Keep your band happy with parties and money while making sure they don't get burnt out! you could buy out other bands; create your own galaxy of music mega-legends, bring fools out of retirement; anticipate the different fads of the people and start your own fads by designing your band's costumes.
Meet the press, manage your band's websites, influence their song writing, ask them to cover your favorite songs in their own special ways (that the computer would generate) and fully customize them.
Each artist would have different stats (a further different stats set for each instrument) out of 20 (1 being low, 20 being high) that reflect the opinions of thousands of real life judges (from eminem to Simon Callow - the douche from Idol)
EXAMPLE OF A LEAD SINGER'S STATS: (I'm making these up, I never really read up on my favorite singers, but I get a good enough idea of them)
Bio:
Name: Maynard James Keenan -- Age: [???] -- Band: Tool, A Perfect Circle, ... -- Height: [whatever] -- Weight: xxx -- Body Condition: 12
Voice:
Voice Section 1: Type: Tenor/Base -- Jazz: 13 -- R&B: 8 -- Rap: 3 -- Metal: 16 -- Rock: 18 -- Classic: 15 -- Blues: 14 -- [what he does]: 20 -- [etc]
Voice Section 2: Voice Strength: 20 -- Clarity: 17 -- Pitch: 14 -- Volume: 18 [etc]
Body:
Tone: 10 -- Muscle Strength: 14 -- Sex Appeal: 16 -- Charisma: 18 -- Hair: Bald -- Skin: White -- Eyes: Brown[sic] [etc] -- Stamina: 16
Personal Information:
Favorite Band: Pink Floyd [sic] -- Favorite Personnel: Adam Jones, Chino Morena [sic], urprobablyright -- Attitude: Professional Introvert -- Relationship with fans: Indifferent -- Lifestyle: Rowdy [etc] -- Preferred Stage Antics: Dancing [Weird], Talking to crowd, Body decoration --
Professional Reputation: Skilled singer -- Fame Rating: 14 -- Fan Respect: 20 -- Fan Loyalty: 18 --
Those are just a few examples of the dozens of stats you could use to bring real life musicians to life in game! Customize your singers with endless characteristics, label them as you see fit! Other singers, for example, who could be seen as Professional Introverts might be people like Ian Anderson, David Gilmore, or whoever you think fits the bill!
There are so many more ideas in my head, but I'll say them later, for now it's dinner time.
Why don't you guys think up some more ideas? Look at the Football [soccer] Manager series and translate it into this game; fill out the stat sheet I did for Maynard with your own favorite musicians, think up a way you could simulate concerts in 3d without having to listen to songs endlessly (maybe a pleasing bell goes off, a bubble tells you what song is playing and you watch the crowd meters go up or down - affect them by changing volume, bass, etc, or shouting to your members to "GET IT RIGHT YOU FOOLS!" - keep an eye on band member stamina and have plenty of refreshments ready to replenish them!)
Just remember to be fair and realistic! For example: I'd give Robert Plant Sex Appeal: 20, or Charisma: 20, but I wouldn't give him Muscle Strength: 20!!
Also Remember things like strength and stamina go down as artists get older! (unless they're running on dope like the 'stones - that can be another Personal stat!!)
EXAMPLE OF ANOTHER LEAD SINGER'S STATS:
Bio:
Name: James Hetfield -- Band: Metallica, ... -- Height: [whatever] -- Weight: xxx -- Body Condition: 8 --
Voice:
Voice Section 1: Type: Metal Legend -- Jazz: 8 -- R&B: 1 -- Rap: 1 -- Metal: 20 -- Rock: 19 -- Classic: 5 [etc] --
Voice Section 2: Voice Strength: 20 -- Clarity: 19 -- Pitch: 13 -- Volume: 20 [etc] --
Body:
Tone: 8 -- Muscle Strength: 13 -- Sex Appeal: 12 -- Charisma: 19 -- Hair: Blonde, Long -- Skin: White -- Eyes: Brown[sic] [etc] -- Stamina: 14 --
Personal Information:
Favorite Band: Led Zeppelin [sic] -- Favorite Personnel: urprobablyright, ... -- Attitude: Live Life Now -- Relationship with fans: Intense -- Lifestyle: Rowdy, Chemical [etc] -- Preferred Stage Antics: Metal - Headbang, Metal - Crazy Antics, etc -- Vice(s): Heavy Drinker, Substance Abuse, ... --
Reputation: Hard Rock Legend -- Fame Rating: 17 -- Fan Respect: 20 -- Fan Loyalty: 20 --
Rate your own artists! It's fun! I've got dibs on Bowie! Deceased artists, however, don't count!
Note: My ratings are just my opinion, not factual etc... don't get offended by my giving James Hetfield a body Tone value of 8!
