A fanboy is a word that carries many negative conotations, but what is wrong with being a fanboy?

I'm a SCE (SONY Computer Entertainment) fanboy, and proud. I am a fanboy because I feel that thier products are the best quality. I can still acknowledge the pros and cons of other consoles but I believe that SCE's products have been nothing short of revolutionary, with amazing games, better disk format than it's competitors (I know PS2 and the original Xbox both used DVD but the Xbox came out after the PS2) and great hardware specs.

Being a fanboy doesn't meen i'm oblivious to other consoles good points.

Have PS3 and 360

360 already got its ribbon

Oh and yes, read the OP before commenting as I doubt you read it before voting

i usually think of a fanboy as a person who cant even listen to other peoples opinions about consoles and defend any game on thier chosen system so i wouldnt call you a fanboy

There is nothing wrong with being a fanboy, so long as you're not a thick-headed, elitist prick.

I'm gonna say that your last sentence is what saves you from being a true fanboy. You see, the real fanboys are the ones that ARE oblivious to the other console's strengths and only focus on their weaknesses. And in the same respect, their console of choice has no weaknesses and only has strengths in their eyes. That is when the arguments start and that is when you see a true fanboy.

I agree, fanboy.

Then, in my opinion at least, you are not what I would call a fanboy. You may be an avid supporter of SCE yes, but not a fanboy. In my mind a fanboy is one who goes off at anyone who suggests that anything other than their choice is the right one, and that refuses to acknowledge any merits of any system other than the one of their choice.

Sega consoles fanboy
DC fanboy
---

But it doesn't mean I can't enjoy the better things about the relative competitors.

As it has been said, Fanboys can take no criticism about their object of fanboyity. Making you, a supporter, not really a fanboy.

Being a fanboy(at least in my mind) is equal to being a fanatic in a religion. There's nothing wrong with following it if you want, but pushing your belief into everything and ignoring the arguments against it is just annoying.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being a fan as long as you keep your mouth shut about it when you're not asked, what gets on my nerves is people who keep complaining and whimpering about what they like...

Being a fanboy tends to be synonymous with irrational love of one thing and irrational hatred of another. This leads to arguments on internet forums which just go around and around. Which is weird because I would think a fanboy of a certain system would want to spend their free time playing that system, not arguing its merits on the internet.

Some fanboys on this forum seem to look for threads about games or the system they don't like, only to make some tired old comment about the subject of the thread even if it's "I hate -x- and have no interest in it."

I concur. To me, the difference between "fan" and "fanboi" is that fans still retain the ability to accept that other people may have different opinions/tastes and not be inferior as a result. Fanbois are looking for external validation of their choice of veneration and, like too many religious fanatics, feel threatened by any expressed opinion that doesn't support them... so any such blasphemy must be attacked, vigorously, to defend the Holy of Holies.

So yes, I'd say that fanboyism is indeed bad as defined above because of its divisive nature. And I say this as a died-in-the-wool Halo fan who is all-too-often ashamed of the fanbois who congregate around my favourite franchise, and all-too-often exasperated by the fanbois who defend their own favourites with unthinking attacks against mine.

This. Unfortunately many fanboys seem to fall under this category.

Is it bad to be a fan?

No.

Is it bad to be a fanboy?

Yes.

Odd i just made a thread about this same subject.... must have been typing it at the same time you made this one.

Well, Fanboys are morons for a start, they are ignorant crybabies who can't take criticism without bringing up the same invalid point that nobody cares about.
Plus, they always try to mix people up in their little campaigns to make themselves look cool to their Fanboy friends, plus they always start flame wars...

It's mostly the "I love A so much I exclude everything else and call it shit and you are stupid for liking it." mantra that some fanboyish types repeat over and over again. If you just love and defend the virtues of your chosen game/games (like I do my beloved JRPG's and turn based combat) but don't decry the virtues of other genres and alternatives then there's really nothing wrong with your fanboyism.

nathan-dts:

Why can't fanboys be like this, and just game, rather than bitch.

I see a fanboy as an ignorant supporter of only one company/console/game who sees or admits no faults in his or her company/console/game and sees only the faults in the competition. OP is a loyal supporter, not a fanboy.

A fanboy who supports a game/console who also isn't afraid to admit its flaws is a rare but good fanboy (witch probably deoesn't make them a fanboy). I'm a 360 + Halo fanboy. I will let people have their say, and i will reply as civilised as i can to them, so long as they do in return.(witch probably doesn't make me a fanboy)

I once made the observation that fanboy's could be refered to as the 'fundamentalists of the gaming world' in another thread on here.

Being a fanboy is a negetive thing since it typically means that you are incapable of seeing other perspectives and have no time for the thoughts and opinions of others.

If someone is open to other ideas and opinions then I wouldn't consider them a fanboy.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being a fanboy, but there is something wrong with asserting fanboyness onto others.

I think it's hard to define somebody as a Fanboy since it doesn't actually have a set definition; It seems like everyone just makes up their own slight variations.

To me, a fanboy is somebody who takes fandom to an extreme level. For example, lashing out at people who criticize their chosen interest, or collecting memorabilia, or getting pikachu tattooed on their butt. This may not fit everyone elses definition which instantly ties "fanboy" to "obnoxious git," but it's the one I use.

I don't hate Fanboys.
Just the things they say.

Yes I know; you telling me before while I was disagreeing about the halo thing.

I'm glad that we could have a civilised rant together.

Being a fanboy is a double edged sword, on one hand you know also and on the other you have no life. I have a lot of fanboys friends their not bad people, but they are really weird.

Sorry, but you're not a fanboy. You're just a fan. Nothing wrong with being just a fan.

"Being a fanboy doesn't meen i'm oblivious to other consoles good points." is kinda like a racist saying being a racist doesn't mean he thinks other races are inferior.

Ex-fucking-actly. I couldn't have said it any better, so I won't even try. I will say that if all the fundamentalist fanboys were to fall off a cliff, I would laugh myself to sleep.

I myself am a Halo fanboy. There's nothing wrong with that. I know that other games are possibly better(but I haven't tried them yet, so can't judge), and that other people enjoy different games and aspects of games.

It is bad, however, to be a fanboi, wherein you're an ignorant prick who is as stubborn as an ass and refuses to acknowledge others' viewpoints and different interests.

I know you want us to comment, but there's really not much more to say than the fact that what fanboy implies is annoying endless barking from the top of their lungs in an attempt to drown the voices of reason scattered sparsely among the crowd, which don't matter anyway because by that point the only ones that are still listening are the ones that feel the same as the one on their feeling-important platform anyway.

If you allow for difference in opinion, though, a fanboy could just be someone who buys pretty much everything that the company releases and thinks that they are fantastic,(I consider myself a Nintendo fanboy as long as you can ignore Wii Music) nothing wrong with that. Just so long as you aren't obnoxious about it.

Fanboy:

A fanboy IS a thick-headed, elitist prick.

A fan is someone who enjoys X but isn't blind to the faults or other opinions.

I need some advice on what games to buy for my Wii because I am struggling.
