Is this game a turn based rpg?

Yes but it's more of a Turn Based Strategy game than a straight up RPG, that and learn to spell and capitalize. Also, I hope you like Cutscenes, there are more than a few, though they are skippable.

Yeah as far as I know there hasn't been anything quite like it before.

It isn't turn-based like Final Fantasy nor is it turn-based strategy like Disgaea or FF Tactics, though it is more like the latter than the former. It's kind of like a war RPG, a hybrid between a third-person shooter and a game like Disgaea. In each turn, you move a number of times like Disgaea but each move plays like a 3rd person shooter with restrictions on how much you can move and you can only shoot/heal once.

It's a fantastic game.

I say it's better to buy it, since it's a great game and a pretty long one (about 30 hours).

Get The Last Remnant instead, that game is the bomb.

Most RPG's our days are piss.

Last Remnant isn't on PS3, plus Valkyria Chronicles is fantastic. I also agree on the buying rather than renting, it's a long game, not even counting going through a second time for ranks/character unlocks etc.

Also Last Remnant is a Grind Fest... the polar opposite of Valkyria which is more about good tactics than leveling.

Regardless of the exact genre it's a game every PS3 owner needs to play.

Turn based strategy 3rd person RPG... with anime/graphic novel art-style.

This is a unique one.

-and the dialog is pretty awful before you join the Militia. I got a bad first impression when Welkin was talking to fish, but after that it got tolerable if not actually good!

The question has changed to Eternal Sonata.

Once again my appologies to the Valkyria Chronicles fans.

Why aren't you gonna rent Valkyria Chronicles?

Why don't you go to the marketplace and download the demo of it? That should give you a feel for playing getting or not. I'd say no, but that's mainly because the character design makes me claw my eyes out.

Yeah thats turn based too, and far more than Valkyria Chronicles.

Valkyria Chronicles is a unique case of turn based. During your turn, you take control of one of your soldiers in real time, then move them around, keeping them behind cover, attacking your enemies, occupying bases, etc.

A throng of immaculately handsome teenagers single-handedly thwarting an invasion by an empire the size of Russia? Perfectly plausible!

*cough*

Less story, more actual characters and their appearance. Makes me want to claw out my eyes.

A bit of both. When it's a particular character's turn, they have a certain amount of time to do whatever they need to do - attack, use an item, move around the play field, cast a spell, whatever. What they can do changes whether they're standing in light or shadow. Some enemies will also change-a pushover might turn into something quite formidable when it moves into the shade.

The voice acting will make you want to hurt someone and the cut scenes are, indeed, long, but I found the overall game to be quite enjoyable.

Aw nuts, and the main reason why I can't get Valkyria is because I don't have a PS3. Well my night is ruined...unless my fav shows cheer me up:)

Time. In the early stages of the game, time only counts down when you're actually doing something, like moving. Later, the meter starts depleting as soon as your turn starts. Doing damage to an enemy fills it up again slightly, but it's basically just a few seconds per character.
