Hey, im not sure why but i suddenly have the urge to play a city building game.I am looking for something along the lines of the old settlers and pharaoh games, i have been unable to find anything that i would really like. By the way i am not really a fan of the sim city type building games, i like the more smaller based but more personal and more attention to detail like city building games, if you know what i mean.Any recommendations would help me heaps thanks.

I'd recommend Spore, if it was actually worth a second look.
I bought it because it was pretty and shiny! How was I to know that the novelty would wear off? Don't judge me!

And depending on your tastes, there are plenty of wc3 custom maps based around that sort of thing floating around. If not, try The Greatest Empires Collection II. Not my cup of tea, but my brother loved it.

Maybe you would like Stronghold.
This (rather old) game is a very realistic castle simulator/part-time RTS.
You need to build a food supply chain, brew beer, make weapons and armour, even candles for your church... and the castle town really comes to life. You can actually talk to the people living in your castle and they will tell you what's on their mind, or what they think about your new taxes. Stronghold 2 has good castle building, more depth and is 3D, but the RTS part is very buggy and the AI is awful.
If you decide to try it out, I'd say go for the original.

What about Stronghold Legends?

IGN and most others gave it an awful review so I didn't bother to try it out.
Besides it has dragons and stuff, and I like things realistic.

Settlers 3 (I think) was fun but it's been ages. Tropico might be your thing or CivCity: Rome (it was a bit of a letdown for me, but you might like it)

Is it just me that seriously ponders on giving this guy the advice of Sim City?

While Maxis games have been up and down the drain lately the Sim City games are timeless and endless in their concept.

Get Sim City 4. That game is fun as hell and I believe there's even an expansion pack for it.
It's identical to Sim City 2000 but with updated current/last gen standards.

Crusaders is pretty sweet too.
Any of the settlers games are great. Ceaser is a good too, its Pharoh but Roman.

Also, since this thread is here, does anyone know how to get Sim City 3 to work on Vista?

Caesar 4 is pretty good.

Its like Pharaoh, only its fully 3D, visually stunning and you don't have to have housing near your production. The only downside is that you can't do any big projects like the Pyramids.

There's probably a demo around somewhere.

I found emperor: rise of the middle kingdom to be really good.

It's made by the same people who did the Caesar series and Pharaoh and refines many of the concepts that made them fun.

Epic construction projects as from Zeus and Pharaoh.
More advanced options for controlling how stock is distributed around your city as compared to the frustratingly limited options in Caesar 3.
Also the graphics were enjoyable and colourful. (The Caesar 4 game went full 3D which I don't think was the smart move)

I found it really fun and played several times over.

Unfortunatly - and this is a big problem - if you want attention to detail, Sim City is the only way to go. Games such as Populus or Black & White, or any game where you literally put down a house here, do this there etc as so shallow once you get past the face of it that it becomes pointless playing.

Sim City takes a while but its a much better experience IMHO.
