The Time had come....to create our OC in the new Sonic Game!!!!

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

After this game release, I REALLY want to see this and other Forums filled with OC all over the place.
I shall take my pop-corns.

But seriously now, it was about time to do something like that. After so many years of fans creating their own characters to a criminal degree, the developers should had get the memo long ago.

What do you think about that?

To echo Jim F'ing Sterling Son, lo and behold, a shitstorm of furry porn be cumming!

Chimpzy:

If there was an option to create your own OC Shark, I would jizz all over my place.

SweetShark:

What do you think about that?

What do I think?

Well, I think it's rediculous that both Sonics in the trailer take down the Death Egg Sentinels so easily. I...oh, you meant the OC. Right...

Well, on that note, I'm uneasy about this. On the one hand, it is a nice idea, how choosing your species gives you different perks, even if all those species are mammals bar the bird, with not one reptile or amphibian (yes, I care about animal representation ;p). I think the perks look nice gameplay-wise, but...okay, there's no avoiding this. The Sonic fanbase has an obsession with OC's. I should know, back in my snot-nosed years, I imagined my own OC's. As someone who writes fanfiction for various medias, there's nothing wrong with OC's, but Sonic OC's are often OC's for the sake of self-insertion, not for the sake of improving the story. I can't help but wonder if Sega knows this, and wants to appeal to everyone who thinks that John Doe the Hedgehog is the deepest bestest character EVAR. Because we see our character running as fast as Sonic, so we're already in the 'as good as Sonic, but better' territory that so many OC's fall into.

But I've already drabbled up a oneshot sattarizing the mook that I intend to post on ff.net this weekend, so I'm not exactly lacking in culpability for this.

You mean, kind of like this?

Sorry, couldn't resist, although it is a pretty apt summary of Sonic OC's.

Chimpzy:

Well, actually, it made me feel better. Not just for the laugh, but because in retrospect, it makes my old "OC for the sake of it" escapades restrained by comparison.

(His name was Bunkie the Squirrel. He was average. He had a crush on Princess Sally, but never had any chance against Sonic. He was the 'jack of all trades, master of none' Freedom Fighter.)

God I feel old...

On the one hand, this has all the makings of a hilarious shitstorm.

On the other, it's basically SEGA cutting out middle-man Devientart and making a glorified fan-fic generator.

But.. someone might steal it.

We'll need to be able to tag our characters with do not steal.

Raddra:

I can see so clear:
A PC Mod which a Text floating all over the character and says "DO NOT STEAL MY OC".

I laughed sh hard, when I saw Jim's take on the video. My first thought was "Sega, you fools! Do realize what you have done? Now Chris Chan can make Sonichu!" But in all serious, this not necessarily a bad idea. THe worse that can happen is a bunch of lazy character edits, but like someone on the forum just said; Sega is cutting out the middle man on Deviant Art, so at leas we won't have to hear peoples pathetic excuses and talk about how original their characters are. Unless you're on YouTube, but those you can ignore too.

Or my favorite, "Original Character, DO NOT STEAL.".

Eugh. That really rankles me. If anything, that should be Jane Doe the deer. Come on people! With a name like that, it's practically staring you in the face!

This is basically every deviantart sonic fanartist wet dreams but at the same time annoying them due to some "features" not included in the customization.

Still I'm a sucker for character creation eventhought I don't played that franchise at all.

I already find the jokes exhausting. Character customization in any other game is great, but as soon as it's Sonic, let's all just meme it up because lul Sonic, amirite guys?

And yes, I am being a party pooper. I get that people are just having some "harmless" fun with it, at least some of them, but you know, it's really just tiring to have one of your favorite franchises constantly treated as nothing more than the butt of everyone else's joke even when there's actually something legitimately good to enjoy about it.

I can't wait for all the Coldsteel the Hedgehog and Blonic OCs.

It's gonna be great.

EDIT: @down oh, that reminds me: will there be an inflation slider?

I hate the precedent this is settting...

But I love Sonic and Character creation.

So, I will have alot of fun with it, and hate everyone else who has alot of fun with it.

Edit: And after my friend showed me the trailer, I quoted the entirety of Blonic.

Given the state of the Sonic fanbase, I can't tell if this move by Sega is incredibly stupid or incredibly brilliant.

Maybe both.

Maybe in the next game they'll have you working in a toll both.
It'll be wonderful.

I haven't made a Shog the Hedgehog or Shog Prower back in my school days but I'm kinda curious about doing it now that it's going to be a gameplay option in Forces. It's kind of a shame I can't make a crocodile, a chameleon or a Bee and I hope I can change how fat the character can be but if not I'll make do with what's on offer.

I'm not a furry...I'm much too poor to make a fur suit but this is a good enough first step.

So I had an idea. Do you remember the Thread I made?

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.382844-Google-Your-name-The-Hedgehog-pic

Well, if the game come out, I will challenge every single one in these forums to create our Sonic OC we find with the same real names.
IF we can of course.....

As I've been discussing with some friends, I'm excited for this game. Not to play it or anything, Gods no, never did like Sonic. Hated Sonic Adventures 1 and 2.
But I just want to see everything that happens with it.
I had the thought a while ago that Sonic Team should make an MMO where people could make their own X the Y, given how notoriously dedicated the Sonic Fandom is.
"Even better" piped up a friend, "Dragonball Xenoverse but Sonic"
Such ideas we believe should PRINT SONIC TEAM MONEY.

But this isn't those, but it's good enough. So long as it has character creation, every Sonic fan who adores their OC will buy it. Maybe we'll see Coldsteel the Hedgeheg. Maybe we'll see Sonichu in videogame glory as his creator struggles for three hours to get the ears and tail right before throwing his console out because the arms are yellow.
I cannot stress that this could be one of the MOST ENTERTAINING video game releases in a while.

Yes, me too I am excited of the characters other people will create.
Now the remaning question is that how much you can do with the characters creation? So far in the video I saw only different part of cloths and gadgets. I guess you can also select the fur color, but what about the eyes, mouth, boby type, ears, etc. You get the idea.

My reaction was to laugh my ass off and post the following in reply on their Twitter: "MY GOD. You fools! Do you not understand the beast you have unleashed?! Think of the fanfics you just fueled! :o"

Overall, I think it's a fun idea, even if it just encourages the OC-happy fandom.

And hey, maybe we'll see the return of this guy:

Hey, It worked pretty dang well for Xenoverse.

Besides, We'll know if Sega's catering to the DA crowd for realsise if the Collector's edition comes with either a bike pump or a sleeping bag shaped like Tails' mouth.

God. I can't wait to see the Let's Plays. I don't even like Let's Plays. But I can see TFS, Game Grumps, and others having a field day with this idea.

I just realized. This is now real.

I have a very totally original character called Shmonic the Shmedgehog.

I'm okay with this just for the Game Grumps playing it.

Meh. I doubt I'll be able to make Leonard the Overweight Porcupine. But hey, at least I'll be able to make a dark edgy version of Sonic. Or, better yet, a bright, maybe silver, version from the future with psychic powers! If those don't scream "totally original" I don't know what does.

But seriously, the long dead Sonic fan in me is stirring in his tomb and I love me some character creators. I'm itching to get my hands on this game!

So, I wondered "What the hell is that?" and googled Shadonic and now my eyes bleed.

Is this an open world game?
I never played mario and wished I could create my own, crappy version of mario.

That sort of thing happens in a skyrim or a mass effect or something where other people can see what you did like in second life.

So where exactly is the appeal in the character creation here?
They sure do tout it as the defining main feature.

Isn't this just character creation, though? It's new for sonic, but otherwise it's been around for a while.

This makes me wonder, which other games have customization of anthropomorphic animals as an option for character creation? (besides The Elder Scrolls games)

You could have just asked and I'd have told you, and spared your bleeding eyes! XD

There's a fangame called "Sonic Robo Blast 2", which is made in a heavily modded Doom engine. Given that this is a modded fangame, there's a community that makes levels, characters, etc.

And back in the day, there was this thing where every few months some new player would join the forums and start going on and on about making their own OC in the game, painstakingly detailing the lore and all, and then they'd promptly give up a week later when they realized you need like 200 sprites or so to actually make the character.

Hence the image in my post becoming a thing.

...And then someone made the character in the game. And people found it funny. And then people started to use him unironically, causing the joke to go full circle.

Can I be the one to ask, and maybe this deserves it's own thread, why does anyone like Sonic as a franchise, as a video game or as a character?

Seriously, lets look at this for a second: As a character, he is just a cartoon animal mascot combined with the worst, yet some how most family-friendly aspects of 90's 'tude.

As a video game, he has been at best, playable. The first 2 were ok, I actually owned Sonic Spinball on game gear, then I hear the Sega CD one was also decent. Even at best, Sonic had the fundamental problem that going all "awesome and fast brah" meant that you needed to memorize every aspect of the level.

Then it went 3D and it all turned into poop, just poop.

Anyway, as a franchise outside games, this is something I am only passingly aware of because there was so much of it, yet none that seemed to be canonically connected to one-another. You had that cartoon one that was somewhat dark and oppressive where he was a member of the resistance of some kind. There was also a much more little-kid friendly cartoon, then there were a series of comics, none of these seemed great.

I was at the right age during the console wars, yeah I was on team-mario but I still had several friends who owned a Genesis, I played Sonic all the time. So, what am I missing here?

My first thought: "Why did EternalNothingness have to be banned? :("
