Marvel Comics is teaming up with the folks behind Nanovor to create a digital collectible game for Facebook and Apple devices.

When it comes to IPs rich with collectible material, Marvel Comics certainly sits at the top of the list. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the comics publisher has signed an agreement with electronic entertainment company Smith & Tinker to create a "Super Hero digital collectible game" for both Facebook and iOS devices (read: iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad).

Exactly what the game will be like remains to be revealed, but a line in the announcement certainly provides a hint: "At Smith & Tinker we're excited to bring [Marvel's] huge portfolio of Super Heroes to Facebook and Apple's mobile platform, letting fans collect and battle while at their computer or on the go."

Smith & Tinker is a mildly surprising choice for Marvel to team up with on a project like this, since the company already owns several major IPs - like Shadowrun, Crimson Skies, and MechWarrior - that it really isn't doing much with at the moment. However, Smith & Tinker does already have some experience with an online collectible game, since it did create the Pokémon-esque MMOG Nanovor.

Based on the description, as well as Smith & Tinker's prior experience, it almost sounds like the Marvel VS trading card game is getting an online update for Facebook and the iPhone. With the title's release sometime in 2011, it'll probably be a while before any real information is revealed, but I'm having a tough time thinking of what other type of game this could be.
