Nintendo Celebrates Classic Mario Glitches

Super Mario Bros. might be one of the most beloved games of all time, but that doesn't mean it was absolutely perfect.

Almost every gamer in the world knows Mario's classic powers: mushrooms make him grow bigger, and flowers let him spit fireballs. But you might not be aware that he had some other abilities in the original Super Mario Bros. game, abilities that the designers never meant for him to have.

As part of the celebrations commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros.' Japanese release, Nintendo has released a video containing a sampling of the weird and wonderful glitches the game contained. Amongst the technical tomfoolery are such gems as Mario and his Koopa foes walking through solid rock, beanstalk dancing, and a very small Mario packing a very large amount of firepower.

Some are more exciting than others, and some - like how to get a ton of extra lives by jumping on a Koopa shell in just the right place - are really more exploits than actual glitches. Still, it's interesting to see some of the bizarre things that could happen when playing such a seemingly simple game.
