Breaking Bad director will helm Warner Bros first female-led superhero movie

Update: Deadline reports that Michelle McLaren has accepted the job and will direct Wonder Woman for a 2016 release. The film will follow Wonder Woman's debut in Dawn of Justice and will likely hit after David Ayer's Suicide Squad feature.

Original Story: Just about every possible name in the industry was floated when Warner Bros announced that they wanted a female director to direct the first female-led feature in their new DC Universe movies. But Variety reports that the studios' choice hails from the world of cable TV drama series.

Michelle McLaren, a veteran TV director who has called the shots on memorable episodes of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and more, is Warner Bros choice to direct the feature. If so, it would make her the first female director of a major superhero feature since Punisher: War Zone's Lexi Alexander, who herself recently made headlines by preemptively taking herself out of contention for the job.

Scehduled for released in 2017, Wonder Woman will be the first film from either of the competing Marvel/DC "shared universe" franchises to feature a female lead. Gal Gadot will portray the title character, who will debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and appear as part of Justice League before her solo feature. Disney/Marvel are planning to respond with a female-superhero of their own, Captain Marvel, the following year in 2018.
