Sony has announced that in a marked contrast to everywhere else in the world, the PlayStation 3 console has been outselling the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 in Australia.

Since the system's Australian launch on March 23, it has sold 500,000 units and has outsold the Wii and Xbox 360 every week. "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," said Sony Australia Managing Director Michael Ephraim. According to the report, Australian sellers are focusing on the system's Blu-ray capability, which may be having a positive impact.

Nintendo has sold more of its Wii console in Australia, but has had its hardware available there since December 7 of last year. Elsewhere in the world, the Wii has consistently outperformed the PlayStation 3, doubling its sales in North America and tripling them in Japan. The Wii did outsell the PlayStation 3 in Australia last week, leading to speculation that the faster pace of Sony's sales since launch may be a result of supply shortages that have plagued the Wii since early last year.
