Mirror's Edge 2 in the Works

Electronic Arts has confirmed that despite lower-than-anticipated sales, it has begun work on a sequel to Mirror's Edge.

Developed by EA DICE and released in November 2008, Mirror's Edge was seen as a bold venture for EA, introducing fresh gameplay in a unique and pleasantly unlicensed environment. The game reviewed reasonably well but wasn't a big seller, especially by EA's standards, not passing the one million unit sales mark until February 2009. EA DICE Senior Producer Owen O'Brien said in October 2008 that the studio had plans for a Mirror's Edge trilogy but doubts about a sequel began to surface after the game performed below expectations.

But Patrick Soderlund, vice president of EA Games Europe and head of DICE, has now confirmed that at least one more Mirror's Edge game will be forthcoming. "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it," he said. "We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do."

"Mirror's Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move," he continued. "The game wasn't perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think."

No information about platforms or a release target were revealed, but it's good news for fans of the game and also for EA's commitment to new and creative IP development in the future.
