The PlayStation is a fifth-generation home console designed to play CD-ROM videogames. The PlayStation helped popularize the use of optical media in home consoles, most of which had relied on proprietary cartridges. The PlayStation gamepad featured four directional buttons, six face buttons, and four shoulder buttons. The DualShock controller, released on November 20, 1997, helped popularize the use of dual analog sticks on a gamepad. The PS One, which was released on July 7, 2000, decreased the size and featured rounded corners and an optional LCD and speaker attachment.
