8 Delayed Games that Will Make 2016 an Awesome Year

Game delays are an unfortunate reality of the modern industry. Whether it’s engine changes, code hangups, or something else, there are a multitude of reasons why a game might not hit its release date. Despite the disappointment that come along side a delay, there’s also a silver lining: those delayed games make the next year even better. So it is with these eight games – they’re poised to help make an awesome 2016.

Homefront: The Revolution

Homefront: The Revolution has had a checkered history since it was announced in 2011. A THQ bankruptcy was followed by troubles at new developer Crytek, and the game finally landed at newly formed developer Deep Silver Dambuster, which was made up of the remnants of the now-closed Crytek UK. The game drops players in Philadelphia four years after the Greater Korean Republic invaded the US, and tasks them with leading a brewing rebellion. Originally planned for a 2015 release, Deep Silver delayed the game into 2016 in March of this year.

Ratchet & Clank

Sony’s rebooting first game in the Ratchet & Clank series, and of course Insomniac Games is working on it. The original plan was to release the reboot alongside the new animated film starring the duo this summer, but with the delay of the movie into 2015, the game is going along with it. We may get a glimpse at this one at Sony’s E3 press conference in a couple of weeks, but it doesn’t sound like we’ll be playing it until next year.

The Legend of Zelda Wii U

First announced in a January 2013 Nintendo Direct video stream, The Legend of Zelda Wii U caused a lot of buzz when the first in-game footage was shown off at E3 2014. Although brief, that look at the open-world roots of the next installment in the popular series was more than enough to get people excited. Unfortunately, the game was pushed back in March of 2015, with Eiji Aonuma stating that the team’s focus was to, “make The Legend of Zelda on Wii U the best game it can possibly be.” The game will not make an appearance at E3 this year.

Mirror’s Edge

While Mirror’s Edge hasn’t officially been given a release date yet, it seems very likely that it will end up as a 2016 title as well. The game will revisit the utopian city of the first title, only in the years prior to the original game. It will serve to show the origins of Faith, the runner from the first game. Mirror’s Edge will also have combat mechanics that DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said were “more refined” than the original. As long as they nail the first-person platforming, we’re on board.

Quantum Break

Remedy’s tale of time manipulation has seen a number of delays since it was first announced during the Xbox One reveal event in May of 2013. Initially slated to launch in 2014, it was delayed to 2015 in May of 2014. Then in April of 2015, the game was pushed back to 2016 to allow Remedy more time to polish the experience, and to keep from conflicting with other Microsoft exclusives planned for later this year. Quantum Break is an extremely ambitious title, so hopefully the delays will allow the team the time they need to get it right.

Dead Island 2

While some people have already seen Dead Island 2 in action, it’s already been pushed back into next year. That means you’ll have to wait to see just how Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager puts their mark on the zombie-laden franchise. The sequel looks to be taking a bit of a step away from the bleak tones of the original, and embracing a colorful look and feel. It’s also going to keep the crafting system from its predecessor, so it should be interesting to see just how it turns out.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

We knew that there would be another installment in the Uncharted series, and in November of 2013, we found out about it. At their E3 2014 press conference, Sony revealed the full title of the game and a 2015 release window. However, in March of 2015, the game was delayed into early 2016 to allow the company more development time. The game will feature Nathan Drake coming out of treasure-hunting retirement to help his older brother Sam, who is voiced by Troy Baker. Could this be the last Uncharted game?

Tom Clancy’s The Division

First announced at E3 2013, The Division was intended for PS4 and Xbox One, but PC support was confirmed soon after. In May of 2014, the game was delayed into 2015, and last month, we learned that it would not be coming until 2016, meaning it’s not going to release until two years after the planned date. Still if Ubisoft can pull off the open-world feel of an MMO with the action of a shooter in a post-pandemic US, it could be a huge title for them.
