The greatest Pokemon of all time wants to join you; won’t you let him?

Nintendo has announced a very special promotion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. The original secret Pokemon, Mew, will soon be available to download in DS remakes Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver, but only until the end of October.

Starting on October 15, those that tap in to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection though a wireless hotspot with HeartGold or SoulSilver will be able to download the psychic feline Pokemon. Don’t get it twisted, this is Mew, the nice psychic cat, not the irritable MewTwo. The promotion will only be available through October 30, 2010.

Though unique Pokemon downloads have been offered up multiple times in the past, including those for Jirachi and a Pikachu-colored Pichu, this one is special due to Mew’s significance, and his rarity. In the original Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, only 150 Pokemon were believed to exist, but Mew emerged as the secret, awesome 151st.

This specific downloadable Mew will start at level 5 with one normal-type attack: Pound. It’s up to trainers to make him the very best like no one ev… well, you get my drift. He comes inside a Cherish Ball with a Premier Ribbon, just to show how special he is, and is received through the “Mystery Gift” option. As usual, players must have a Pokedex and fewer than three Wonder Cards.

In Pokemon‘s nearly fifteen year videogame history and sixteen different versions (eighteen counting Pokemon Black and White), Mew has mostly been obtainable only through trading. If you own Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver, enjoy playing them, and don’t take this opportunity to download a Mew in the comfort of your own home, there’s something really, really wrong with you.
