Australian Gamer Shoots For Black Ops 2 World Record

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

Okan Kaya played Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for 135 hours in his Guinness World Record bid.

An Australian gamer – no, not that one – put in 135 hours of continuous Black Ops 2 play, in a bid to take the Guinness World Record for longest recorded gaming session. “I think it was the third day I felt a bit nauseous,” says Kaya in this television interview.

Kaya played the game for seven days, adding together his ten minutes break per hour allowed by Guinness – so the competitor can eat, sleep and do other things – into longer time periods, so as to survive the experience. Despite logging so many hours, Kaya is only the 37th in Black Ops 2 world rankings.

Guinness has yet to confirm the new record, but all the paperwork is in; it should just be a matter of time.

At least now Kaya can rest. “My hands were cramping up and I went through a lot of bandages,” said Kaya. “I even tried to ‘pad up’ my controller … If I told the wife I had to go away for a week again and smash another record, she’d probably file for divorce.”

While I have some sympathy for her point of view, Kaya’s wife only has herself to blame. According to Kaya, he was inspired to take on the challenge by reading about other marathon gaming sessions in the Guinness World Records 2010, a book his wife gave him. Let that be a lesson to us all, particularly since Christmas isn’t that far off; careless gift giving can have any number of unexpected results.
