There were some missing parts of the Battlefield 6 puzzle in the open beta tests, and the single-player campaign was one of them. Understandably, of course, because beta testing a campaign is awkward and difficult to do. However, not seeing the campaign is also worrying, especially when other games have started to de-emphasize them.

The lack of a campaign in Battlefield 2042 is one of the often-discussed negatives of that particular instalment, which is why the Battlefield 6 campaign has so many people hyped. That and the fact that a modern campaign can be an unforgettable and cinema-like experience. So here’s what we know so far – and what we want to see.

The Escapist recaps

  • The Battlefield 6 campaign is reportedly 6 hours long, but take this with a pinch of salt until it’s confirmed.
  • Set in 2027, the story sees the US and its NATO allies fight the Pax Armata mercenary group.
  • The campaign will feature the elite US Marine Raider unit Dagger 1-3.
  • BF6’s story should span the globe, from Egypt to Gibraltar, Tajikistan, and the US.

Everything we know about BF6’s campaign so far comes from a mix of the first Battlefield 6 trailer and the multiplayer reveal. The next Battlefield is set in the near future, in 2027. In this alternate timeline, the world is in a very precarious situation, with a reshuffling of global powers.

To the strains of Bob Dylan’s iconic Masters of War track, the reveal trailer shows a US president speaking to the world and issuing a warning to the Pax Armata mercenary group. In this world, some major European countries have left NATO, with the US and remaining allies attempting to maintain stability as tension rises. Meanwhile, the Pax Armata attempts to capitalize on the chaos.

How and why the mercenary group is intent on doing so isn’t clear, but it has deep pockets, the latest technology. And it is keen on reshaping the existing world order and presenting itself as a dominant military power. That explains some of the destructive warfare we’ve seen in the Battlefield 6 playtest, but how did the story get there?

Dagger 1-3, an elite US Marine Raider unit, and a core cast of characters will be front and center in telling and showing us. Action set-pieces are to be expected, and the campaign will focus on individual members of the unit, and an ‘Agent Mills’ of the CIA. For what it’s worth, Marine Raiders are skilled in unconventional warfare, special recon, and counter-terrorism.

Yes, there have been Battlefield 6 campaign leaks. So, without spoiling story particulars, we can say that the campaign will deliver a prologue and eight missions. Perhaps that’s one mission per member of Dagger 1-3, but it seems there would be more members of a Raider unit than eight. But take this with a grain of salt until it’s confirmed by official sources.

A further leak (per Insider Gaming) suggests that the BF6 campaign mode is six hours. Further suggestions that it could be cut further have followed, too. The campaign was reportedly in a bad spot earlier this year. Having lost its studio, Ridgeline Games, it was rebuilt, but failed to make the May 2025 Battlefield 6 alpha goal.

What we want from Battlefield 6’s Campaign Mode

While there’s no suggestion that the campaign won’t be ready in time for launch, our main request is that no matter how long it is, it delivers on the great first-person shooter campaigns of old. A great six-hour campaign is preferable to a boring twenty-hour one, but we want to leave it pumped up or excited to jump into multiplayer, using the valuable context to enhance our overall Battlefield 6 experience – that’s what good campaigns do for games where the main draw is multiplayer

So give us that world-building writing, but also give us the set-pieces that will define any good Hollywood production. After all, if we’re to spend a minimum of $70 on Battlefield 6, that kind of feels a necessity. We don’t need all action set-pieces, though; just something thought-provoking that strikes an emotional chord with us will do wonderfully. Oh, and lots of vehicles, please.

In fact, if there’s not a single mission where we’re required to drive or pilot a vehicle as a pre-multiplayer treat, then this writer will feel let down. Obviously, I’d own the game and would have already parted with my money, but I’d be disappointed. One thing to avoid, though: spectacle over story. BF6 has huge destruction, we know, but we want a soul there, too.

Things we’d be less keen on are needless deaths of key characters, using any type of weapon or mechanic that can’t be used in multiplayer (this will break the escapism), and big glitchy issues (this will do the same). Who are we to make demands? Money-paying gamers, but really, we just want to enjoy it once the Battlefield 6 release date fades.
