Battlestar Galactica PC Mod Released

This article is over 17 years old and may contain outdated information

In the relative void of science-fiction-based space simulators, a modding initiative aimed at combining a revamped version of the Freespace 2 engine with a Battlestar Galactica theme produced its first demo.

Beyond the Red Line developers have released a stand-alone three-mission demonstration, now with Mac support, and Linux support in the wings.

The downloadable demo also allows users to create their own missions using a level-editing program like the one delivered with the original Freespace 2. Several custom extra levels are now available from the community forums.

The engine in the demo uses The Freespace 2 Source Code Project, which adds enhancements to the engine of the 1999 game, including planets, higher resolution support and stars.

Beyond the Red Line developers have stated that the full release, when it arrives, will be available for free via download.

The genre of science-fiction-based space simulators flourished in the 1990s, but paradoxically, largely collapsed as the hardware to more realistically depict such fantastic, imagination-driven scenarios emerged.

The only notable similar offerings on the commercial level for the PC in the past eight years have either eschewed joystick support, a la Freelancer, or have been packaged in extremely complex and massive-world based gameplay, a la X3: Reunion.
