Remember the shocking revelation of the Mass Effect 2 trailer, which I’m not directly referencing because it’s hugely spoilerific? BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka say it’s not a hoax.

This is your second spoiler warning so continue at your own risk:

In the first promo trailer released for Mass Effect 2 it is revealed that Commander Shepard, the hero of the first game, has been killed in action; furthermore, a Geth appears to be wearing his broken, blood-spattered armor. Needless to say, it doesn’t look good for the Commander and company, and gaming forums have been alive with conversation and debate about what it could actually mean. Surely BioWare wouldn’t kill off the hero of the Citadel, right?

Maybe. Who knows? It’s hard to say and BioWare isn’t helping. “Everything we’ve said before about keeping your save games, keeping the continuity of the trilogy, is absolutely true,” BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka told Shacknews. “Everything we’ve said in the teaser is absolutely true as well. What does that mean?! How can it fit? That’s a surprise.”

“We’re full of secrets and mysteries,” added fellow co-founder Greg Zeschuk.

Fortunately, it sounds like the studio will shed some useful light on the matter soon. “You know, the fans are talking it up. We’re excited by the reaction, because we released it knowing it would provoke that kind of reaction,” Muzyka continued. “And you know, it’s a teaser, right? But we’ll have more to show soon, and I think the fans are going to be very satisfied.”

A great bit of marketing it may be, but I think Muzyka and Zeschuk are enjoying this just a little too much. Mass Effect 2 is currently slated for release in early 2010 on the PC and Xbox 360.
