Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live dropped a bombshell for RTS (Real-time Strategy) fans; Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is officially happening. After eight years on the back burner, the series is back, and with KING Art Games at the helm, the franchise is in good hands with the promise to be bigger than ever.
With expertise in RTS gaming, KING Art Games seems like a natural fit, and from trailer footage, it looks as though they’re going back to basics (with modern tech, of course) to capture what fans loved most about the original Dawn of War. Here’s all we know about our return to the grim darkness of the far future.
The Escapist recaps
- Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4 returns the franchise to its RTS roots.
- The first trailer for the game was revealed at Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live.
- The release date for Dawn of War 4 is slated for 2026.
- The fan-favorite Blood Raven Space Marines are one of four playable factions.
When could Dawn of War 4 be released?
There’s no confirmed Dawn of War 4 release date as of yet. However, the game is slated to arrive at some point during 2026.
KING Art Games has promised that there is much more to be revealed in the coming months, so hopefully, we’ll get a tighter release window soon.
Expected Dawn of War 4 price & pre-orders
There’s no information on Dawn of War 4 pre-orders yet. However, those wanting to be in the first wave of pre-orders when available can wishlist the game on Steam today.
We don’t know what the Dawn of War 4 price will be as of yet, but it can be helpful to look at earlier games such as The Dawn of War: Definitive Edition for comparison. This is a remastered version of the original game, which launched in August 2025 at $29.99. With the pricing of AAA games seemingly always on the rise, it’s fair to say fans are looking anywhere of $50+.
Dawn of War 4 platforms
The only Dawn of War 4 platform that has been confirmed is PC.
Real-time strategy games pair extremely well with a mouse and keyboard, so seeing the game available to wishlist on Steam isn’t surprising. This is definitely a boon for PC gamers; however, console users should despair.
KING Art Games’ last big release also catered to PlayStation and Xbox. Hopefully, cross-play will be an added element for co-operative campaigns, but we will have to wait and see what they have in store.
Dawn of War 4 trailer and gameplay analysis
Beginning with an evocative narration about duty and sacrifice and ending with gameplay footage (stated as a work in progress), the first Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4 trailer already has fans excited.
What stands out immediately is the game’s commitment to classic Dawn of War style. Gone are the MOBA-like mechanics that split the community previously; this is a strong pivot back toward base-building, resource management, and large-scale squad-based warfare.
We know the game will showcase four factions: the iconic fan-favorite Blood Ravens Space Marines, the brutal Orks, the ancient Necrons, with the Adeptus Mechanicus making their DoW debut. Each faction will come with a dedicated campaign that reflects their identity on the battlefield.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Blood Ravens and Mechanicus are likely to be allies, both being members of the Imperium of Man. Single-player, cooperative play, and returns of popular modes like Last Stand, alongside Skirmish and competitive multiplayer, should be enough to keep your chosen faction busy for a long time.
The trailer for Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4 did more than announce a sequel; it reassures players that this latest entry isn’t just a new game, it’s the franchise returning to its strategic roots, but with modern polish, cinematic storytelling, and a roster of factions that speak to both nostalgia and fresh beginnings.

German development studio KING Art Games began as a small studio focused on point-and-click adventure games. They really took off in 2020 with Iron Harvest and showcased their ability to tackle large-scale RTS games, putting them in good standing to handle the world of Warhammer.
There is very little information on the campaigns; we know that each faction features its own dedicated campaign, with narratives that are mostly self-contained but will occasionally intersect.
The game takes place on the planet Kronus, where the robotic Necrons have slumbered in stasis for millions of years. With previous games mentioning Kronus, it’ll be interesting to see where this one fits into the timeline and lore.
A fan-favorite, the Blood Raven Space Marines are a mysterious chapter with an unconfirmed geneseed origin rumoured to be loyalist successors to the treacherous chaos-worshipping Thousand Sons. Hopefully, we will get a bit more information about the unusual origins of these enigmatic warriors.
Both Dawn of War and Space Marine 2 are set in the Warhammer 40K universe after the opening of the Great Rift and return of two loyalist primarchs. However, both are set in two different theatres of war in the vast galaxy of M41. Therefore, Titus and the gang from Space Marine 2 are unlikely to be involved.
