Eine ehemalige Entwicklerin hat laut Rock Paper Shotgun <\/a>auf LinkedIn best\u00e4tigt, dass das Team hinter dem Projekt aufgel\u00f6st wurde. Ashleigh Amrine, ehemalige Senior Gameplay Engineer bei Amazon Games, schrieb nach den j\u00fcngsten Massenentlassungen: \u201eI was part of the layoffs at Amazon Games, alongside my incredibly talented peers on New World<\/em> and our fledgling Lord of the Rings<\/em> game (y\u2019all would have loved it).\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ihre Aussage legt nahe, dass das Lord of the Rings<\/em>-Projekt bereits im Zuge der Umstrukturierungen gestoppt wurde. Insgesamt wurden rund 14.000 Stellen bei Amazon gestrichen \u2013 besonders betroffen: Entwicklerteams rund um MMOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazons zweiter gescheiterter Versuch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Das Spiel war 2023 offiziell angek\u00fcndigt worden und sollte von Amazon Games Orange County entwickelt werden. Das ist dasselbe Studio hinter New World<\/em>. Geplant war eine Kooperation mit der Embracer Group, die die Rechte an Der Herr der Ringe<\/em> h\u00e4lt. Das MMO sollte sowohl Geschichten aus The Hobbit<\/em> als auch The Lord of the Rings<\/em> behandeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es w\u00e4re bereits Amazons zweiter Anlauf f\u00fcr ein Online-Spiel im Mittelerde-Universum gewesen. Schon 2021 hatte das Unternehmen ein \u00e4hnliches Projekt gestrichen, nachdem Tencent den damaligen Partner Leyou \u00fcbernommen hatte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wie Bloomberg<\/em> berichtet, erkl\u00e4rte Amazons Vizepr\u00e4sident Steve Boom in einer internen E-Mail, dass sich die j\u00fcngsten Einschnitte \u201espeziell auf den MMO-Bereich\u201c konzentrierten. Parallel dazu k\u00fcndigte das Studio an, keine neuen Inhalte mehr f\u00fcr New World<\/em> zu entwickeln \u2013 die Erweiterung Nighthaven<\/em>, erschienen am 13. Oktober, soll das letzte gro\u00dfe Update gewesen sein. Die Server sollen laut Amazon mindestens bis 2026 online
