Legendary has just announced a new collaboration with Sunrise at Anime Expo 2018 that will see Gundam get its first ever live-action movie. Details are scarce and a provided press release by the studio stresses no story details are being revealed right now. However, it does include a brief synopsis for the premise of the original beloved anime series and its setting in the "Universal Century," the main timeline that many of the dozens of Gundam anime, mangas, and video games have been set in:
The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted.
Well Pacific Rim did prove a movie about giant robots by Hollywood can work. On the other hand Hollywood adaptations of Japanese media is still pretty poor
Can it be a live action g gundam
I'm guessing it'll go about as well as the live action Dragon Ball Z movie or Ghost in the Shell. For some reason Anime never translate well into movies. Probably because your average movie is 90mins long and an anime is 12+ hours. A movie basically has 10mins to get through every single 30min anime episode and convey everything needed. And it always fails.
will see Gundam get its first ever live-action movie
Just because it sucked doesn't mean it didn't happen.
This being said, this'll either turn out well like Pacific Rim, or be an irredeemable piece of trash that should have everyone involved end their career like Pacific Rim 2.
I have one question and one question only: Why do they keep doing this?
I mean, not like Deathnote, Dragon Ball Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, and The Last Airbender (yes, I know, not 'anime')...weren't all shitty enough.
"First live action Gundam movie?" Don't they know that G-Saviour is a thing?
Either it will be bad, or it will be bad, but people who do not like Gundam will think it is good.
I wont mind being wrong about this though.
