Fox Business recently labeled The LEGO Movie‘s use of a CEO as its villain as an attempt to “indoctrinate” children with “anti-capitalist messages.”
It’s pretty hard not to love LEGO. Whether you tried to eat them as a toddler, played with them as a child or just enjoy some of the more recent play sets, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that there’s a way for most everyone to enjoy it. That in mind, it should be no great surprise that the recently released LEGO Movie has been a big hit both with critics and at the box office.
Not everyone has responded well to the movie, however. The folk at Fox Business recently took exception to film’s antagonist, the diabolical CEO Lord Business. “Why is the head of a corporation, where they hire people, people go to work, they pay their rent, their mortgage, they put their kids through college, they feed their families, they give to charities, they give to churches — why would the CEO be an easy target,” asked host Charles Payne.
His guest, media analyst Paul Dergarabedian responded that movies of this sort generally rely on villains in positions of power. Co-host Monica Crowley, in turn, accused Hollwyood and The LEGO Movie of “trying to indoctrinate kids” with “anti-capitalist messages.” Dergarabedian pointed out that LEGO itself is a pretty big company obviously hoping to promote its brand and make money with the film, but that seemed to fall on deaf ears. Granted, it wouldn’t be Fox if the responses were rational but still, the silliness here is pretty spectacular.
