GameStop: Kinect Will Beat Move Over the Holidays

GameStop predicts that Kinect will triumph over Move during the all-important holiday sales season.

It’s been out for less than a week but Microsoft’s Kinect is already GameStop’s pick as the big winner in the great Motion Control Throw-Down of Ought-Ten. “I’d say right now Microsoft’s Kinect is looking to be the winner of the two for us,” GameStop Senior VP of Merchandising and Marketing Bob McKenzie told Eurogamer.

“We’re very happy with the sell-through over the weekend. It has met our expectations and actually exceeded our initial forecasts,” he continued. “I do have them both obviously and the Move sports bundle is a great option, but I knew for my family – with an eight-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old boy – that Kinect was really going to be the thing that was more geared towards my household.”

Microsoft ramped up its Kinect sales forecast the day before the device was unleashed on the North American market, bumping anticipated holiday sales from three million units to five million, making it the biggest launch in the history of the Xbox. Sony said near the end of October that it had sold roughly 2.5 million units of Move worldwide, putting it very close to the three million mark predicted for it by analysts, but SCEA CEO Jack Tretton told Reuters that production is “maxed out” and that Sony doesn’t expect to be able to meet consumer demand for Move until February 2011.
