EA FC 26 Announced
EA Sports has promised that EA FC 26 will be its most immersive football experience to date. This new soccer game will have improved features, such as its enhanced AI behaviours, player animations, and an extended variety of tactical systems that will help players define their teams.
With EA FC 26 release date confirmed for September 26, 2025, this comes just after the start of Champions League football.
EA FC 26 trailers have been released, and eagle-eyed fans have already spotted some visual upgrades and even more emotional realism within the crowd. Currently, there are rumours that one of the new features for Ultimate Team will include women’s football leagues, which will help bring global FIFA soccer representation to a new high.
Whether you are a casual or competitive player of EA games, the game is aiming to be the best football simulator ever released.
Transition to EA FC Games
When FIFA Football rebranded to EA FC games, it was not just about licensing. After three decades under the FIFA name, EA decided to break away from its long partnership in 2023, due to a dispute about creative freedom (and reportedly, high licensing costs)
Even though they lost the “FIFA” title, the main experience remained the same; some fans even argued that it had overall improved. The world of soccer is developing every season, without restrictions, which gives EA the freedom to present this within the EA FC games.
FIFA Football Games History
Full timeline of FIFA Football games in chronological order.
FIFA International Soccer – 1993
This became the official debut that kicked off this franchise. This soccer game became available on Sega Genesis and SNES, and it featured simple mechanics; however, let’s not forget it popularized what would become known as FIFA soccer gameplay staples.
FIFA Soccer 95 – 1994
The franchise’s first sequel appeared on the Sega Mega Drive and further added team clubs. The pace was more realistic, and there was an ability to track real-world results. This reflected on the growing popularity of FIFA Soccer rankings.
FIFA Soccer 96 – 1995
This was the franchise’s first step into 3D, as well as licensed player names. Real-life commentary was a new feature alongside full leagues, too.
FIFA 97 – 1996
Interestingly, FIFA 97 introduced indoor play, a strange, but interesting addition that wouldn’t stick around for long in later games. Graphics were further updated, and gameplay was smoother to enhance players’ experience.
FIFA: Road to the World Cup 98 – 1997
This edition included qualifiers for the World Cup and was the first game to have full licensing. With the deep tournament structure, this game is widely regarded as a fan-favorite.
FIFA 99 – 1998
AI was enhanced, and gameplay became faster for players. Menus became streamlined, and league formats were adapted for better accessibility.
FIFA 2000 – 1999
This game was improved by the addition of Major League Soccer and even classic teams. For more mainstream appeal, celebrity involvement also occurred.
FIFA 2001 – 2000
Players had improved controls with refined visuals and new power bars. The AI of the goalkeepers was also enhanced for players’ benefit.
FIFA Football 2002 – 2001
From the success of the new power bars in the previous game, they were added for passing, and they also refined the physics.
FIFA Football 2003 – 2002
FIFA 2003 was a big jump up graphically for the series, and also was where total ball control became a feature. This game was where the Club Championship mode was first introduced.
FIFA Football 2004 – 2003
This is where Career Mode as we know it came into its own. Better ball mechanics and off-the-ball player control were further developed.
FIFA Football 2005 – 2004
This game added first touch control and an enhanced career mode. The licensing was improved, just as with player likeness.
FIFA 06 – 2005
FIFA 06 cashed in on some of the loud noise that Football Manager had been making and introduced a long-term ‘Manager mode’. This would eventually be spun off into FIFA Manager, its series within the franchise.
FIFA 07 – 2006
The stadium atmosphere was enhanced, and so was the commentary. This game included an expanded online play and improved ball physics, too.
FIFA 08 – 2007
The debut of Be A Pro happened, and players were able to control just one player through a match.
FIFA 09 – 2008
This is arguably one of the biggest versions of FIFA in its history as it introduced what would go on to become FIFA Ultimate Team, a mode that has gone on to define the franchise. An added feature of 10v10 online play was introduced too, and tactics were thoroughly improved.
FIFA 10 – 2009
Improvements were made, nonetheless, including a gameplay overhaul and a further feature of Virtual Pro, but what made this game stand out from the others was the advanced customization features.
FIFA 11 – 2010
As for player individuality, the personality+ system was introduced, and there was a further option for players to be the goalkeeper too.
FIFA 12 – 2011
FIFA 12 brought in several highly touted changes with the Player Impact Engine, Tactical Defending, and Precision Dribbling. These innovations were all made to make a more fluid and precise gameplay.
FIFA 13 – 2012
First Touch Control was the big new feature in the 2012 offering. This allowed players to move and create space more creatively. There was also a rework of set-pieces to give players more ways to score.
FIFA 14 – 2013
FIFA 14 is arguably one of the biggest. There were some important physics upgrades for next-gen, and shooting mechanics and animations were further developed.
FIFA 15 – 2014
FIFA 15 took an interesting route by introducing the ‘Living Pitch’ which saw the playing field visually degrade. Players were also imbued with their own emotions, reacting to the goings-on in games in different ways.
FIFA 16 – 2015
FIFA 16 was a very important milestone for the franchise, as it introduced women’s national teams, inviting women’s football into the virtual playing field of FIFA for the first time.
FIFA 17 – 2016
FIFA 17 introduced The Journey, an interesting experiment EA Sports would play with for several years, which included fully fleshed-out stories following fictional player Alex Hunter.
FIFA 18 – 2017
There were visual improvements, and ‘The Journey’ story mode continued. With this game came enhanced dribbling and control.
FIFA 19 – 2018
Saw several big game play additions in the form of Active Touch System, Timed Finishing, and Dynamic Tactics for a far more realistic feeling version of soccer. The game also finally clinched one of its last licensing holdouts, the Champions League.
FIFA 20 – 2019
VOLTA football mode was first introduced, which brought back the past spirit of FIFA Street.
FIFA 21 – 2020
FIFA 21 was a lighter year, bringing in Agile Dribbling to help running with the ball feel better. Elsewhere, Career mode saw a bit of a revamp, adding more realistic transfers and conversations with players and agents.
FIFA 22 – 2021
For next-gen realism, HyperMotion technology was introduced. This was a big improvement to the feel of the game, affecting most aspects of play. Players felt more realistic, laying the groundwork for years to come.
FIFA 23 – 2022
This game was the end of an era, with it being the final FIFA title, but it did include cross-play, and it expanded women’s leagues, too.
EA FC 24 – 2023
It marked a new era with its first under its new name, but they updated the physics and included co-op clubs.
EA FC 25 – 2024
Teams were updated, server upgrades occurred, and smarter AI was introduced. This game was focused more on community feedback than ever before.
EA FC 26 – 2025
Anticipated to have better emotional realism, upgraded animations, and the feature of real-time league changes. This game has the potential to set a new bar for football simulation.
