The latest Destiny 2 chess puzzle and its Taken Shader are the latest secrets that have left the community scratching their heads in search of a solution.
While the main secret of the puzzle was information about the upcoming Edge of Fate expansion, the Taken Shader has become the talk of the town because of how it looks. There are a lot of different pieces to this chess puzzle, and there are multiple solutions too. Most of these solutions will reward you with a ton of Episode Heresy weapons, including Adept ones with twin perks, but somehow the Taken color scheme is the talk of the town, once again proving that fashion is the true endgame in Destiny 2.
How to Get the Taken Shader in Destiny 2
Before we get to the Taken Shader part, you’ll need four chess pieces to start this puzzle. These pieces are scattered across Eris Morn’s apartment, the Tower, Court of Blades in the Dreadnaught, and The Drifter. There are 60 pieces in total, but you’ll just need four, which you can find at the following locations:
- On the table with the Ahamkara bone, inside Eris Morn’s Apartment. (Pawn)
- Beside the Taken Vendor Slab in Eris Morn’s Apartment. (Pawn)
- In the Hallway leading to Eris’ Apartment. (Knight)
- At the reception downstairs in Eris’ Apartment complex. (Bishop)
Where to Find the Gigantic Chessboard in Destiny 2
With the chess pieces sorted, make your way to Eris’ Throne World through the green portal in her apartment. Head to the table where she’s got all her books piled up, and look below the ledge. You should see a secret room here.

Jump off the ledge and head into the room, and you’ll see a small chessboard placed right in the middle of the room. Interact with it and you’ll be teleported to another world with a gigantic chessboard. This room has a massive Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone vibe, but the only difference here is that no one’s playing Wizard’s Chess, and wrong moves aren’t fatal.

After you reach the big chessboard, face the White King, and then turn around and head to the platform behind you. You’ll see a series of icons on glowing pillars. These icons represent Knight, Rook, Pawn, Queen, and Bishop from left to right. You should see a small prompt in the lower left corner where your buffs appear whenever you stand on these pillars. The corresponding piece will appear when you shoot a position on the chessboard.

Additionally, the other glowing pillars on the left and right sides of the board indicate Delete and Take, respectively. The board is lined with letters A-H and numbers 1-8, just like a regular chessboard, and we’ll be using those markers to denote the position where you should be placing your pieces on the board.
How to Unlock the Umbral Rumble Shader for Free in Destiny 2
Now that you know the basics of how the chessboard works, you need to place your four pieces in the following squares:
- Knight – B2
- Pawn – F4
- Pawn – A6
- Bishop – G7
This should reset the entire board and give you a lot of pieces that you need to place on the board in a specific order, which is as follows:
A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
8 | Queen | Rook | |||||
7 | Knight | Queen | |||||
6 | Queen | Queen | Bishop | Queen | Rook | Rook | |
5 | Pawn | Rook | Pawn | Bishop | Knight | ||
4 | Rook | Knight | |||||
3 | Bishop | Queen | Bishop | Bishop | |||
2 | Pawn | Rook | Pawn | Rook | |||
1 | Knight | Bishop | Knight | Pawn | Pawn |
Once you’ve done this, climb on the portal behind you and interact with the glowing object, prompting you to “Submit Answer.” This will spawn a chest on the other end of the room, which contains the following rewards, including the Destiny 2 Umbral Rumble Taken shader:
- Deinterlace (Ship)
- Enigmatology (Emblem)
- Exotic Cipher (x1)
- Ascendant Shards (x3)
- Strange Coins (x25)
- Curio of the Nine (x3)
