How to Get a Horse in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered

Here's everything you need to know about how to get a horse, including the unicorn and Shadowmere in Oblivion Remastered.

Owning a horse is crucial in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered because it will save you a lot of time while exploring Cyrodiil. While you do have the option to explore the lands on foot, which will in turn help you level up the Athleticism minor skill, it’s still a time-consuming process.

Oblivion Remastered features different horse breeds, each with their own pros and cons, so you can choose which one suits you best. However, regardless of your choice, having a mount is beneficial, especially during the early game

Where to Find a Horse in Oblivion Remastered

You will commonly find horses inside stables in every major city across Cyrodiil. The only legitimate way to get a horse is by purchasing it, and the amount of gold you need to spend will depend entirely on the breed of the horse you’re looking to buy.

Stealing a horse is considered a crime, and you’ll have a bounty placed on your head. If you’re okay with leading the life of an outlaw, then this is something you could opt for. But if you’re sick and tired of guards being hostile, then purchasing a horse is the best idea.

All Horse Breeds and Where to Get Them in Oblivion Remastered

There are five different types of horses that you will find in Cyrodiil:

HorseStablesSpeedPrice
BayBay Roan Stables (Bravil) Grateful Pass Stables (Skingrad)261,000 Gold
BlackBlack Waterside Stables (Cheydinhal)335,000 Gold
ChestnutNorth Country Stables (Chorrol)292,500 Gold
PaintWild Eye Stables (Bruma)Five Riders Stables (Leyawiin)23500 Gold
WhiteHorse Whisperer Stables (Anvil)292,500 Gold

Apart from these five, there are two special horses that you’ll find in Oblivion Remastered

  • Shadowmere: This horse is associated with the Dark Brotherhood questline, and you’ll be able to get it after completing The Purification questline. This steed is immortal and can only be killed if you’re using console commands.
  • Unicorn: This steed can be found in Harcane Grove, deep within the Great Forest. Despite it being available from the very beginning, we recommend getting it during Hircine’s quest. Three minotaurs guard the unicorn, and while it’s entirely possible to sneak past these monsters, outrunning them is difficult. They’ll follow you longer than regular enemies will, and they hit like a truck. During Hircine’s quest, you’ll need to eliminate these Minotaurs one by one, making it the best time to pursue them. This steed is worth acquiring because it’ll fight alongside you in battle, and is immune to physical and poison damage. However, the only drawback is that when you leave it, the unicorn will disappear, only to reappear at random moments, as if it’s haunting you.

If you’ve bought a horse but can’t seem to find it, return to your nearest stable and collect it from there. Whenever you leave your horse unattended, it’ll return to the closest stable, from where you’ll be able to pick it up again.

How to Get Horse Armor

Even your horse gets armor sets in Oblivion Remastered. To kit your horse, visit Snak gra-Bura at Chestnut Handy Stables and hand him 500 Gold. Whenever you kit out your horse, its health gets doubled.  Since your horse can take damage and perish in battle, it’s always good to use armor on it, unless you’re using Shadowmere.

When you talk to Snak gra-Bura for the first time, you can also persuade him into giving you the Armored Old Nag for free. Despite having armor, this horse’s health is limited to 250 only, and you cannot switch the armor on this mount either.
