Just like Gems, Runes are items that give your weapons and armor pieces additional bonuses in Diablo 4. Introduced with the Vessel of Hatred update, these Runes have replaced Gems for the most part, thanks to the value that they add to any build.
Runes come in multiple rarities, and there are various ways to earn them. However, if you’re looking to use these, you’ll have to own the Vessel of Hatred expansion. If you don’t own the expansion, these items won’t drop for you at all.
Where to Farm Runes in Diablo 4
The easiest way to farm Runes is by heading into the Kurast Undercity activity. This is an endgame activity, where you must complete three levels in a dungeon within a stipulated time. Before you start the run, you can use a Tribute of Harmony with it, which ensures that you get guaranteed Rune drops if you complete the activity within the stipulated time.

Alternatively, opening chests in the Helltide and defeating the Blood Maiden Helltide boss are also good sources of Runes. You can also get Runes from Whisper Caches at the Tree of Whispers, but the drop rates are low from this source.
How to Use Runes
There are two types of Runes that you will find in Diablo 4: a Ritual Rune and an Invocation Rune. Together, these runes form Runewords, which you can use with your gear. Since this is a combination of two items, you can only use them on gear with two sockets.
You’ll generate a certain amount of offering whenever you perform a specific action based on the Invocation Rune you’re using. Once the offering matches or crosses the threshold the Ritual Rune requires, it’ll trigger a certain effect.
