The Gryphon in Destiny 2 is a vehicle that Bungie introduced with the Rite of the Nine update. It seems to be a weird hybrid between Fallen Pikes and Sparrows.
While it’s clunky, it has guns that let you easily shoot red bar enemies, so you don’t have to get off your sparrow when running Patrols in the open world. This sparrow upgrade was long due, and could lead to some sparrow shooting missions throughout the Year of Prophecy, starting with the Edge of Fate expansion.
How to Unlock the Gryphon sparrow in Destiny 2
The Gryphon is locked behind the Heavy Metal event reward card and is the only way to unlock this vehicle for now. Speaking of Heavy Metal, this is the first time you can control Brigs and Drake Tanks in a PvP event.
While you can launch this activity from the director, make sure you talk to Lord Shaxx and collect the event card and the Path of Demolition quest. If you don’t speak to him, whatever progress you make in the matches won’t count towards the event, and you won’t be able to unlock the rewards.
The event card has 15 ranks in total, and the Gryphon heavy sparrow is the final reward for hitting max rank in the Heavy Metal event in Destiny 2. You’ll receive event XP for every match you complete, and winning a match will give you more XP.
How to Play Heavy Metal in Destiny 2
To play Heavy Metal, land at the Tower and speak to Lord Shaxx, who’ll give you the Path of Demolition quest. This quest has eight steps, which are as follows:
- Complete a game of Heavy Metal
- Claim a reward from the event reward track.
- Complete and claim a daily challenge.
- Reroll a daily challenge.
- Speak to Shaxx.
- Earn Heavy Metal Tokens.
- Purchase a reward from the reward shop.
- Speak with Shaxx.
It’s a 3v3 casual PvP event involving vehicles with a massive Armored Core vibe attached to it. You don’t need to bother about your builds here because infantry isn’t involved at all, and your builds won’t affect your vehicle’s stats and abilities.

It’s a simple Supremacy-type event, where you get a point for destroying an enemy vehicle. Whenever you defeat an enemy, they drop a coin. You’ll need to pick up fallen enemy coins to repair your vehicle. The team with the highest score at the end of the match, or the first team to reach 60, will win the match. The only caveat is that you can’t choose which vehicle you want to drive.
Heavy Metal is a must-play event in Destiny 2 because we’re not sure when the Gryphon will be made available again. With its weapons, the Gryphon might come in handy in the Hypernet Current strike in the Sparrow segment, but it just might be a tad bit slow.
