In Doom The Dark Ages, Bethesda arms you with 11 different weapons to stop Prince Azhrak from claiming the Heart of the Argent, and each weapon has its own Mastery skin.
These weapons range from Grenade Launchers to Shotguns, and come with a dedicated upgrade tree that makes them more lethal as you progress through the different chapters. The Mastery skins associated with every weapon don’t offer any advantage but signify that you’ve truly unlocked its full potential.
How to Get Mastery skins in Doom The Dark Ages
Once you’ve fully upgraded a weapon, you’ll have to complete the following feats to unlock their respective gold Mastery skins:
Weapon | Challenge | How to complete |
---|---|---|
Combat Shotgun | Barrel Stuffer (150): Hit demons with every pellet from Combat Shotgun shots 150 times. | Shoot large enemies like Cyberdemon, Mancubus, or Vagary Champion at close range. |
Super Shotgun | Super Barrel Stuffer (50): Hit demons with every pellet from Super Shotgun shots 50 times. | Shoot large enemies like Cyberdemon, Mancubus, or Vagary Champion at close range. |
Shredder | Burster (100): Cause secondary Pincushion or Ricochet damage to demons with the Rail Spike Shredder 100 times. | Before attempting this challenge, make sure there are smaller enemies around the bigger demon. If you’ve got Pincushion equipped, shoot the demons until they glow orange and throw your shield at them. If you have Ricochet equipped, throw the shield at them first and then shoot them with the Shredder. |
Impaler | Acupuncture (100): Regenerate your melee charges with the Lobotomy bonus head shots from the Rail Spike Impaler 100 times. | Use all your melee charges before headshotting the enemy with the Impaler. Smaller enemies also count towards this challenge, but you’ll have to continuously keep using your melee charges as soon as they regenerate. |
Accelerator | Redline (1000): Cause Overload or Heatblast damage to demons with the Plasma Rifle Accelerator 1000 times. | Keep the trigger pressed till the Accelerator starts dealing its secondary Overload damage. If you release the trigger, it should fire a Heatblast. Be careful, though, because holding down the trigger will eat through your ammo reserves quickly. |
Cycler | Thermal Runaway (500): Cause Overloaded or Lightning Arc damage to demons with the Plasma Rifle Cycler 500 times. | Keep the trigger pressed till the Accelerator starts dealing its secondary Overload damage. If you kill a demon with shock damage, it’ll arc to a nearby enemy. Even these count towards this challenge. |
Pulverizer | Hunter (250): Cause Charged damage to demons with the Skullcrusher Pulverizer 250 times. | Kill small demons to build up charge for the Pulverizer, and then shoot a bigger demon with the built-up charge. |
Ravager | Gatherer (100): Gather Skullcrusher ammo by damaging demons with the Supplier equipped Ravager 100 times. | Kill enemies with the Ravager and pick up ammo you get from killing them. Avoid using a Glory Strike because those won’t count towards this Mastery challenge in Doom The Dark Ages. |
Chain Shot | Reverberation (100): Cause explosive Cosmic Breach damage to demons with fully charged Chainshot Reaver impacts 100 times. | Charging up the Chain Shot by pressing and holding the trigger will deal Cosmic Breach damage to demons. |
Grenade Launcher | Clusterfun (100): Cause secondary Fragment and Cataclysm damage to demons with the Grenade Launcher cluster grenades 100 times. | Just like with the Shredder, hit the enemy with your shield and then shoot them with the Grenade Launcher, but you need to ensure that the grenade strikes the demon’s body directly for the challenge to count. |
Rocket Launcher | Engorge (50): Heal yourself with the Cannibalism upgrade from close range blasts of the Rocket Launcher 50 times. | Parry a Hell Surge projectile and then shoot a Rocket on the ground in front of you. |
How to Farm Mastery skins quickly
After you’ve unlocked the Mastery skin challenges in Doom The Dark Ages, you can farm them in specific chapters. While it’s also possible to earn them while progressing through the story naturally, farming kills with these particular weapons is just more convenient.

Chapters 19 and 22 are the best places for you to farm for these skins because they have high enemy density. In fact, Chapter 19 is the best because the initial section features a Berkserk power up where you have infinite ammo, so you don’t really need to worry about collecting ammo pods.
Additionally, head into the settings menu and turn down the damage to the demons’ level to 50%. This will allow you to land more hits on the enemy before they die. Sure, it’ll increase the difficulty for the encounter in Doom The Dark Ages, but you’ll be walking out with a flashy gold Mastery skin!
