Medieval Lithuanian Battles Come to Life in Real Warfare: 1242

Russian software house 1C Company has announced that work is underway on Real Warfare: 1242, the first in a planned series of Real Warfare real-time strategy games.

Sick of the Second World War? Tired of playing around in fictionalized future conflicts? Do even the exotic sights and sounds of the Napoleonic campaigns leave you flaccid? Maybe you need to switch things up with a trip back in time to medieval Rus during its struggles with Swedish and Teutonic invaders and, worst of all, a rampaging Mongol horde.

A “realistic real-time strategy game based on authentic historic events,” Real Warfare: 1242 will put players into the boots of Prince Alexander Nevsky as he fights to repel invaders and placate the Mongols. The game will focus on accurately recreating some of the most famous battlegrounds of medieval Eastern Europe, with huge swaths of territory to conquer rendered in “vivid, life-like” visuals.

Born the fourth son of Prince Yaroslav II of Vladimir, the real-life Nevsky rose to prominence following a series of military victories over Swedish and Teutonic knights. He also willingly subordinated his people to the Mongols, a decision which would have a significant impact on the development of the modern Russian nation. His veneration as a saint began soon after his death at the age of 43; he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. In a 2008 poll that drew more than 50 million votes, Nevsky was chosen by the people as the greatest Russian of all time.

Real Warfare: 1242 is being developed exclusively for the PC and is expected to be released later this year.
