Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is the next adventure of the interstellar bounty hunter Samus Aran, and the first Metroid game on the Nintendo Switch 2. Like the previous Metroid Prime games, Beyond will be a first-person shooter that sees Samus blasting waves of aliens while exploring a new planet, solving puzzles, and curling up into a ball to reach new areas.

Below, we’ll reveal everything we know about the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond release date, the platforms it will be coming to, and where to pre-order the game. Finally, we’ll also confirm some important information for new fans about how the Prime series is different from the classic ‘Metroidvania’ games, which the series is known for.

  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be the first Metroid game on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond release date

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will come out on December 4, 2025, meaning Metroid fans don’t have long to wait until they can get into the new game.

Along with the main game release, fans can look forward to a retrospective book on October 28, 2025, and new Amiibos in November and December of the same year.

Are Metroid Prime 4: Beyond pre-orders and prices live?

Yes, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond pre-orders are now live, with the Switch, Switch 2, and Upgrade Pack options up for grabs.

Players can pre-order the game in anticipation of December on the Nintendo eStore, with the Nintendo Switch version sitting at $60 and the Nintendo Switch 2 edition jumping up to $70. There’s also an Upgrade Pack option available.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond platforms

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be released for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

The game was originally intended to be solely released on the original Nintendo Switch, but since the release of the Switch 2, Nintendo has confirmed that the console will receive its own, upgraded version of the game. You won’t be missing out if you haven’t upgraded to the more powerful Metroid Prime 4 platform, but you may not get the ideal experience.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond trailer & gameplay analysis

The trailer shows that the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond gameplay will be similar to the previous games in the Prime series. It will be a first-person shooter, and not a Metroidvania experience like the original Metroid series.

However, Samus will still be able to roll up into a ball like the 2D Metroid games, and she’ll also get to engage in some platforming segments. But for the most part, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will see Samus blasting enemies with missiles, bullets, and lasers in frantic first-person combat.

This fourth Metroid Prime game looks more like Doom and Halo than earlier entries in the series. The original trailer sees Samus dropped into a warzone where she immediately infiltrates a base and starts blasting aliens. Samus can also be seen scanning dead enemies for weaknesses and adding this information to a log.

A more recent gameplay trailer sees Samus exploring a lush jungle world after her ship crashes there. Here, the scanning mechanic is used to solve mysteries and puzzles to help her navigate the hostile world. Finally, the trailer shows Samus unlocking new powers like telekinesis, which can be used against enemies and when interacting with the world.

Ask The Escapist

Is Metroid Prime 4: Beyond a ‘Metroidvania’ game?

No. Metroidvania games, the name being a combination of Metroid and Castlevania, are typically 2D (or 3D-2D) platforming adventures, whereas the Metroid Prime games are first-person shooters.

While the 2D Metroid games still get made, the Prime titles are more like the Halo series, but set in the Metroid universe. Samus can still fire her cannon, roll into a ball, and take part in platforming segments, but the combat is mostly shown in the first-person perspective.

Some segments in the Metroid Prime series do occasionally show Samus in the 2D style, often when she turns into a ball to roll through vents; however, this is mostly a nod to the series’ 2D past more than anything.

Will Metroid Prime 4: Beyond be a Switch 2 exclusive?

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be a Nintendo exclusive, releasing on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

The Metroid series is a first-party Nintendo franchise, so it’s highly unlikely that the series would ever appear on another console. That is, unless Nintendo arranged with a third party like Xbox.

But as it stands, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will only be available on the Nintendo Switch family of consoles.

Who is Samus Aran?

Samus Aran is the protagonist of the Metroid series, which includes the Prime games and the original series. Formerly a soldier in the army of the Galactic Federation, Samus became disillusioned and decided to become a bounty hunter instead.

Samus uses a powered exoskeleton that is equipped with a powerful arm cannon and even lets her roll into a ball to reach difficult areas. She still works with the Galactic Federation, accepting contracts to hunt down space pirates and hostile aliens.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond continues the story of the Prime series, but also sees Samus stranded on a hostile planet.
