Modern Warfare 2 Gets Dual-Wielding

Modern Warfare 2 is adding dual-wielding to its gameplay, though Infinity Ward is quick to assure us that just because you can act out your John Woo fantasies in-game doesn’t mean it’ll break the game’s balance.

Dual-wielding has been around for a long time, but I suppose the thrill of holding two gigantic guns at the same time is so ingrained to the pleasure centers of our violence-craving minds that the thought of it making its debut in a big-name shooter is still something to get at least a little bit excited about. Yep, Modern Warfare 2 will have the same feature every shooter from Counter-Strike (dual elites!) to Halo 2 has already, Infinity Ward revealed this weekend.

Though Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling wasn’t entirely specific on how it will work, it appears dual-wielding appears in the form of a perk dubbed Akimbo, which you can equip or grab off of a dead body.

“I was presenting a singleplayer mission at the GameCrazy show this morning on stage and happened to walk over a body that had Akimbo (dual wield side arm), therefore the icon for the weapon popped up on screen and the room went crazy with chants demanding I pick it up and use it,” Bowling wrote in a post on the Infinity Ward forums. “So I did.”

What a crowd pleaser. The perk “happened to be dual [Desert Eagles],” which suggests that you might get different weapons to double fist depending on the situation. So does that mean you can grab two AK-47s and go nuts John Woo style? “Akimbo is limited and balanced, just like EVERYTHING in the game,” Bowling said. “It’s limited to sidearms, harder to aim than standard and you can’t go ADS (aim down sights) since you have a weapon in each hand; Among other balancing techniques, so don’t freak out before you see it in action.”

Yeah, calm down everyone. It’s just dual wielding. Yeesh.
