Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has some big numbers in mind when it comes to Fable 3.

Despite what you may think of the Fable games – or certain members of the design team – no one can deny that they sell pretty well. The first two Fable games managed to sell around three million copies each, but Molyneux wants Fable 3 to take things to another level.

“We want more than five million people playing Fable 3 on the Xbox 360, full stop,” he said, adding that he felt it was a much less cluttered and more balanced game than previous titles in the series, and had a better story and cast. “More clarity, better story, better cast, better balance … Of course, we have to do all this still with fresh ideas and a new feel to the game.”

Back in June, Molyneux talked about needing to make profits in excess of $150 million with Fable 3 in order to prevent the series from “withering,” and again mentioned the sales target of five million copies. What’s interesting is that this time he is only talking about Xbox 360 sales, suggesting that the total sales target for the game is even higher.

It’s certainly not impossible for Fable 3 to sell that many copies on the 360, but it’s not going to be easy. A lot of work seems to have gone into making the game more accessible than its predecessors however, so perhaps it will meet its target after all. Fable 3 is released for Xbox 360 on October 26th, with a PC version coming later.
