Mortal Kombat Will Recreate Fun of MK II

Ed Boon wants you to know that his new Mortal Kombat is getting back to basics and will be just as much fun as the original arcade games were.

There’s been a lot of curiosity about the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot. The public is going to get to spend some hands-on time with it at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend, but Warner Bros. and Ed Boon are providing some advance information about what to expect.

Aside from releasing this trailer, which shows some of the game’s nastier moves in silhouette (so that no one sees the bloody details), Ed Boon also sat down and talked with IGN about what fans have to look forward to when the game’s on display at PAX. Aside from the six characters that were available at E3, Kitana from MK II and Cyrax from MK 3 will be playable, too.

According to Boon, the game’s biggest asset is that it’s such a return to form for the Mortal Kombat franchise:

Whenever people play this game, everybody to me kind of volunteers this information of “Wow, this reminds me of playing Mortal Kombat II at the Pizza Hut down the street” or “the 7-11 when I was 15 years old.” Just some oddly specific memory that they want to volunteer for me. That’s what this game is. It’s the Mortal Kombat II and III kind of experience. The 2D stuff. Those great strategies of jumping over projectiles and ducking under projectiles and throwing people and stage Fatalities and really shocking, gruesome Fatalities. Stuff that has been very signature to Mortal Kombat that we took a departure from.

And now, we’re coming back with a vengeance. As aggressively as possible in all those categories that I talked about. To me personally, I’m confident that the people who play are going to walk away totally psyched to buy this game.

From what Boon says, the game sounds like it’ll be a blast. His description of Kung Lao’s Fatality is particularly epic. Some of The Escapist’s writing team will be at PAX this weekend; it’s likely that they’ll probably spend at least some time with Mortal Kombat and will be able to provide some updated impressions of how the title is coming along.
