The four teams of developers currently working on Battlefield 6 have collectively decided that goofy crossover skins are out and “gritty, realistic shooter” is the focus.
Recently, the devs behind Black Ops 7 announced that no silly crossover skins would carry over into the game, meaning all the Beavis and Butthead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and other random characters wouldn’t be present. This was the franchise’s attempt to step away from the lighthearted crossover skins inspired by Fortnite’s success and go back to the realism and intensity that made Call of Duty popular in the first place.
This was met with approval from the fanbase, which had previously been relentlessly telling Activision that they were sick of gunning down Nicki Minaj and Michaelangelo. Now, Battlefield 6 is doubling down on this sentiment.
Battlefield 6 devs want to go back to franchise roots
Battlefield Studios developers recently sat down with IGN to discuss Battlefield 6, including the controversy over shooters having unrealistic skins in other titles.
“Other games can and should be whatever they want to be, right? Fortnite is pretty goofy, and that game is pretty good. So, I think where we end up is we’re pretty happy with where we are. We are a gritty, grounded, realistic shooter,” Technical Director Christopher Buhl reassured fans.
Senior Console Combat Designer Matthew Nickerson added that the team is “aware” of how other shooters are dealing with crossovers, but have decided it’s just not going to work with Battlefield 6. He said: “We’re not chasing trends. We’re not chasing other products.”
Battlefield 6 has largely remained on the serious side, although some fans got concerned when a leak showed a skin with neon green lining. While it’s nowhere close to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles running around a map, it still made fans of the realistic shooter a bit worried it was looking to add some humor or fun to its cosmetics like others in the genre.
Unrealistic skins will not fly with Battlefield’s audience, so developers have reassured the fanbase that there won’t be any silly skins in Battlefield 6. No Barney and Friends running around with a helmet and machine gun? Darn.
