Everyone’s favorite Umamusume loser flooded with donated grass in real life

Umamusume: Pretty Derby has taken hold of my life in ways I cannot describe. It hasn’t, however, pushed me to donate grass to the real-life horses the anime horse girls are based on – just yet. However, players from around the world have been informed that their favorite loser horse, Haru Urara, has started to see her immense grass deliveries start to hit the stables.

It’s a delightful scheme, which over the course of the years has racked up over 3 US tonnes in total donations. That number exploded, with over 1000 KG (around a ton) donated since the game launched in the West back in July.

So why Haru Urara in particular? Well, it’s because she’s a loser. As we’ve already written about before, the horse in real life failed to win 113 of her professional races. She did recently win a race during her retirement, but at 29, she appears to me more comfortable munching on grass than out on the race track. You go, girl.

This is reflected in the game during her career mode. She spends a lot of time having to build up fans to enter races, and is given significantly fewer requirements to beat during each segment of the run. It’s utterly absorbing seeing this pink little critter suddenly surge forward and win a race against characters wildly out of her league.

262 people at the time of writing have donated to Haru, positioning her second overall on the site. The top place goes to Grass Wonder, who died a few hours ago at 30. While fewer have donated, the total weight is what sets them apart, with Grass Wonder going out with just under 4000 KG donated overall.

Umamusume fans are a different breed

Umamusume: Pretty Derby feels like deja vu for some who survived 2011’s Brony and My Little Pony epidemic, which saw people become obsessed with cartoon horses. However, rather than bringing us some of the freshest, sickest horrors to shock those not chronically online, Umamusume fans appear to just be doing good. Until you look at X (formerly Twitter), where people are lewding up these anime horse girls, and it feels wrong.

The game has done massive numbers since hitting the West, reaching $22.8 million as July closed out. That’s 50.3% of the game’s revenue, split between West and Japan. It doesn’t appear to be stopping either, as the game rolls into its current event, which is all about Gold Ship, a troublesome horse.

All this just in time for the latest event

The new event adds the Golshi Mode that awards additional monies, and up to 5640 carats (the premium currency) for logging in. There are also new missions to earn Gold Ship stars to upgrade the character.

Training never ends, and I’ve become cutthroat with turning these horses into glue at the first sign of failure. The grind never ends.
